The two small triangles are not similar because 5:2 (2.5) does not equal 8:3 (2.667).
Therefore, the hypotenuses of the two small triangles are not at the same angle. The big 'hypotenuse' is not a hypotenuse, but a broken line.

It's quite easy.... *sarcasm*

Well I'll be, anon delivers again.
This means that said "hole" is compensated for by the whole shape slightly "puffing up" along the "large triangle's" hypoteneuse

To make it more simple the slope of the triangles are different. But only slightly, and since you expect to see a perfect triangle thats what your brain perceives.
On the triangle that is full there is a very slight downward bend to the triangle, so there is one unit of area extra. On the one with a missing cube there is a slight downward bend so there is a little bit of excess space, and since there is a limited amount of total area one cube is missing.

Hope that was put in more simple terms!

The 'triangle' isn't actually a triangle. it is a qaudrilateral with one angle close to 180 degrees. does that help?

No, it's not, it's just scalene triangle.

its not even a triangle, nevermind a scalene triangle. a scalene triangle is a shape with three sides and three angles and each angle is different to the rest and each side is diferent to the rest. this shape has four sides and four angles.

For starters your wrong about the number of sides and angles, but it's just showing that the same shapes are used in the same confines but it makes a different shape.
