Lt Dan getting his legs blown off is one of the best things that happened to him... tho there were a few years where everything sucked... but after it all... he joined his ''friend'' on a boat and grew a real friendship... he came at peace with himself, he found a lady and married, he became a millionaire... his life got better because of it in the end. and he got new legs too

I think that's the point. He did deserve better than Jenny, but he loved her so much, that even though she didn't deserve to be with him, he wanted to be with her, which even further elevates Forrest's quality as a human being.

On the contrary. She kept leaving because she knew herself, and knew that she might hurt him eventually. He hit the creep at the strip show place, he beat the hell out of the one guy, so on. She knew he was very, very protective of her, and that it would eventually get him into trouble. That, and she had problems in her life- cocaine, crap like that. She didn't want to create trouble for him. So she left.

No- she knew that he was a far better person than she was. That's why she did all of that. She didn't want to hold him back.

Remember how Forrest originally had braces on his legs? And when he ran, they shattered apart, freeing him. Ever notice that Jenny never ran when Forrest did? Remember the scene where she is about to commit suicide, and they're playing Free Bird? She was thinking of Forrest. He was the bird. He was free. She wasn't.

no I think you are missing what mitchr is saying - he's saying that Jenny would be agreeing with you right now. She KNEW that Forrest was a good person and deserved better than her. So the reason she kept running away was because she was hoping that Forrest would forget about her and find someone else, someone better for him. But after seeing each other so many times, she realizes that he will never fall for anyone else. So she finds him, introduces him to his son, and agrees to marry him. It's clear she doesn't exactly "love" him through the movie anyway - she's just trying to make him happy, because she knew at that point that she was close to death, and no matter how far away she got, Forrest would always love her.

This isn't some sort of case to say "but wait, she wanted him to be happy, so she DID deserve him!" In fact, it's the exact opposite. I'm saying that she knew exactly how she was no good for him. But in the end, she realized that Forrest DIDN'T care at all about whether or not he deserved better. And she realized that he would be much happier being married to her before she died then just seeing her name in the obituaries of a newspaper one day. i mean holy **** , that would have crushed him

I think you are missing what I'm saying again...she DIDN'T care that much. She liked Forrest as a person but didn't love him. The only reason she wanted to marry him was because AFTER realizing that she was already near death, she figured "why not" and married him to make him happy.

I completely disagree with the the fact that Jenny didn't love Forrest. She loved him right from the beginning, she says so herself many times. But, like others have said, she never let herself be with him because she had so many problems in her life that she didn't want to bring into Forrest's. He deserved better than that.

Only when she had gotten her life together by getting clean, getting a steady job and having a son did she let herself be with Forrest. She had finally felt like she was in a good enough place to be with him.

If that's not enough of an indicator, just look at her last line in the movie: "I love you". She loved Forrest just as much as he loved her. She just needed to get through all her problems before she could let herself into Forrest's life.

She made a lot of mistakes, but through it all, Jenny was still a great person.

Anyways, where I was-; They loved each other, but she wasn't as good a person as he was. She left. He deserved better, yes, I agree, but that doesn't mean she was a horrible person. She had problems. Drunk daddy, attachment issues. She didn't want him to suffer because of her. Laudable, in a way.

Ever read 1984? It's sort of like doublethink.
She was not as good a person as Forrest was, so she left. That makes her a better person; perhaps still not equal to him, but regardless.
It isn't black and white, it's more complex than that. She wanted Forrest to be the greatest he could be, but he couldn't do that with her. She left for the sake of him.

Also, she didn't just "drop" the kid on him. She was about to die. It would have been between her drunk-ass rapist dad, or Forrest. As for her reappearance, well, ever heard the song "Dammit" by Blink-182.
"And it'll happen once again, you'll turn to a friend, someone that understands, who sticks to the master plan."
She was down on her luck, maybe, or perhaps she was giving it another try, seeing if she had improved herself. She realized she would still hold him back, so she left.

Starts off somewhat slow, but the last section of the book is enrapturing.
When I got there, I couldn't put it down at all. Stayed up a few hours to finish.
