Pa-ren-theses, they look like this: ( ), and in this case they encase numbers. More spesifically 9 and 3. It's almost like magic bars, just for numbers*!
First is the parenthesis Witch gives us ''(9+3)=12''
Then we move a step to the left
2.12= 24
next, we're left with
48/24=
2
---
To those who say it is 288, i do believe it's not.
the other way to do this is to solve 2(9+3) first as one, witch would give us 2 again, and i do believe that is the correct answer.
(2*9 + 2*3)=24
48/24=2
"Different countries start from either the left or the right
Fo rUS the order of operations goes from left to right
For other places it is initially set up differently, which is why the same problem can have two answers
As in for the US we'd divide 48 and 2 before multiplying"
University math student here.
There is no one right answer here, this equation is written in a retarded way.
Now, the bidmas priority system is a pretty good guide, and if you follow that the answer is 288, but the fact that we are able to discuss what the answer is is a pretty good sign that this is just a case of poor writing.
I mean, no-one thinks its remotely interesting when someone writes a sentence that is hard to understand, and this is the same thing.
For those who did the multiplication of 2 and 12 first it is wrong since you read equations left to right when it comes to multiplication/division (Which is literally the same thing)
