Is it not common in the US to keep dogs in cages while travelling by car? We keep our dogs in cages in the back, mostly because of their own safety. Imagine if you have to slam the break while your dog is sitting in the front seat.

My old German Shepard used to put his paws up on the dash when we slammed the breaks and would bark at the person in front of us for being dicks.
