The photo above is the closest humanity has Her come to creating
Medusa.
If you were to look at this, you would die instantly. End of story.
The image is of a reactor core lava formation in the basement of
the Chernobyl nuclear plant. It' s called the Elepha nes Foot and
weighs hundreds futons, but is only a couple meters across.
Oh, and regarding the Medusa thing? This picture was ta ken
through a mirror around the corner of the hallway. Because the
wheeled camera they sent up to take pictures of it was destroyed
by the radiation.

This is the 3rd time I've seen this posted dammit.

Yes it is highly radioactive, being near it could kill you, but this was years ago. Simply looking at it is not enough though.

Since then the intensity has died down. You can get much closer with a protective suit and stay relatively safe.

Even merely looking at it wasnt enough when it was new. It was still very dangerous.

As for the camera breaking, thats nonsense aswell. Its a simple truth that back in those days all camera's still operated using film. And film can be exposed to light to take a picture, but it also becomes exposed by radiation. So pointing a camera directly at it wouldnt work, the film would simply be over-exposed and the picture ruined.

Which is why they had to take a picture of a mirror image around a cornor, where the radioactivity wouldnt ruin the picture.

almost extinct wildlife is flourishing there now because humans cant interfere
User avatar #50 to #42 - sanguinesolitude ONLINE (09/18/2013) [-]
well yes and no. it is doing well as in they are living there, but mutations are accumulating and a very large percentage die off or are stillborn. Its kinda a mixed bag.
Lots of wildlife has moved into the area and is flourishing, but there are some serious issues associated with the high levels of radiation
#43 to #40 - anon (09/18/2013) [-]
nothing is happening there, its still uninhabitable
User avatar #44 to #40 - ivoryhammer (09/18/2013) [-]
Pretty much nothing, humans can't live there safely, so wild dogs and other animals have taken over.
User avatar #47 to #44 - okamiterasu (09/18/2013) [-]
So dogs are more radiation resistant than humans?
User avatar #48 to #47 - ivoryhammer (09/18/2013) [-]
Wild dogs are.

It's highly radioactive, yes, but not as dangerous as it was. Also, if it really was as dangerous as prior, standing around a corner with a ******* mirror wouldn't change a thing. It's not a ******* basilisk, ffs.

They waited for it to stop radiating dangerous radiation before starting to take photos of it though.

I'm not sure. FJ is crazy 24/7. They could just thumb it up for no reason. But still, chances are I will get several negative thumbs. Good idea! By the way, did you thumb down that famous comment made by anon talking about how 9/11 wasn't even remotely funny?

The fun thing is that the radiation came from reactor 4 in a steam explosion. Some important safety features were missing like a giant lead tombstone that should have dropped on the core in case of catastrophic emergency.

That one release was 300-400 times larger than Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

There are still reactors that were not dealt with very well or as far as we know at least because the Soviet government didn't really care about the people. They didn't tell anyone about the accident for at least a week after it happened. In Belarus (where 60% of the fallout landed) many people ended up going out to swim in their local rivers and spending the day there enjoying the radiation since they were not warned at all.

It is even more awesome once you look at the birth to death ratios in the country after the event. Right after the accident, the birth line started moving down and the death line moved up until it reached what it has been for the past while. That one small country is dying because of the neglect of it's government.

In the harry potter books yes. In Greek mythology the Basalisk was said to "cause death with a single glance". Medusa could turn you to stone with a single glance. I just felt the Basalisk was a more fitting descriptor.
