I smoke American Spirits because I like the taste of them better. They have a nice earthy flavor, especially the Periques.

Well actually there's no evidence to support that they're any better for you. In reality, the tobacco itself is what does the most substantial amount of damage to your body, not the lingering chemicals from growth and treatment. It's actually been shown that because American Spirit (or at least their certified organic pack) is whole leaf and naturally grown -- therefore retaining a higher content of the natural oils and substances such as nicotine and carcinogenic tar -- it actually has a higher impact on your lung capacity than standard mass-produced tobacco. I smoke American spirit because it has a superior taste, and unlike most other smokers, the reason I started smoking in the first place was because I developed an interest in the taste/smell of tobacco and the culture behind it, as a result of years spent in a cloud of second-hand smoke from close friends and family. Sure I sometimes smoke cheap generic-brand cigarettes that have been handed to me by some passerby GGG bumming out smokes, but if you ever see me at the counter of your local convenience store with cash in my hand, I guarantee you that the pack I'm asking for is American Spirit Navy Blue certified organic.

We don't smoke it because we're hipsters. We don't smoke it because it's good for us.

We smoke it because we care about the quality of our tobacco.

Smoking pesticides can't be better for you than not smoking pesticides. Also, the additives in many make it far worse than just tobacco. Also, I would bet the 'taste' you refer to was just slight nicotine addiction. (I'm around secondhand smoke a lot and I can feel a slight lean towards addiction)

"was"
>implying I don't still smoke

Also I make it a point to have very good control over my addiction. Obviously because I'm subjecting myself to an addictive substance, there is some level of physical addiction, but by consistently denying my cravings over a period of time I've taught my body to stop having withdrawals, and I sometimes stop smoking for months at a time without realizing it (because nobody offers me a smoke and I don't think of going down to the store to get any). I smoke because I want to and because I enjoy it. As for your argument about pesticides, OBVIOUSLY they do their own kind of damage to your body, but read my post again and focus on the keywords.

" In reality, the tobacco itself is what does the most substantial amount of damage to your body..."
I didn't say that the chemicals don't do damage too, but whole-leaf organic tobacco has its own problems.

"Was"
>implying it happened in the past
I meant was as the comment being limited to the specific past event.
"the reason I started smoking in the first place was because I developed an interest in the taste/smell of tobacco and the culture behind it, as a result of years spent in a cloud of second-hand smoke from close friends and family"

Also, I didn't mean to imply you where heavily addicted or anything, just that second hand smoke will give you a slight draw to smoking.

Also, regardless of what's doing more damage I'd rather get hurt from stronger tobacco than from inhaling pesticides. (One is intentional)

The culture behind smoking? Smoking doesn't really have a culture. If any it has the most low class and ghetto culture out there. And I'm a smoker. I'm ashamed to be a smoker not because I have to pay extra attention to my teeth to prevent them from getting yellow, not because ash and dust congregate under my computer desk and in every nook and cranny, not because the last time I cleaned out my computer case I found dark brown dust unlike the normal gray dust I'm used to, not because there is a huge lack of non-trashy women that can put up with smoking.

But because everyone around me that smokes save for a few people are absolute trash.

On the side of the pack, it has a warning explaining that organic tobacco does not mean a safer cigarette.
