Free will

As you journey along the path you meet an old man.
He tells you that modern neuroscience has proved
that all our actions and decisions are merely the
machinations of a predetermined universe and that
our concept of free will ' is naught but a comforting
illusion.
If you agree with his hypothesis, turn to page 72
If you disagree, turn to page 72

Does anybody know what these kind of books are called? Where you decide how the story will go based on your own decisions?

I think it's something like "make your own adventure" or "play your own adventure", maybe "read your own adventure". Something your own adventure anyways.

It's a cool idea, really. Everything that has ever happened could not have happened any other way, but since there are so many inputs (everything that has occurred from the beginning of time to the present moment), we could never possibly predict them all. It would mean that free will is an inescapable illusion, yes, but such a convincing illusion that we really needn't worry about it.

If either one or the other actions were part of the universes plan, then I shall burn the book, which should be enough to shatter the fabric of time and space.

But until such a point comes where we can predict the motion of every particle of the universe, inclusive of our brains, and hence know our future choices, the future isn't fixed.
#5 - Womens Study Major (09/15/2013) [+] (3 replies)
If that is the case, then the multiple universe theory has no real value. Because, by that theory there is a universe where everything goes EXACTLY the same as in another one...except at this very point I made the decision not to post this. Every influence on me was the same, but I still chose not to in some other universe. Why? Because we choose.

Further, even if this is true, it does not matter. We still have our free will. Why do I say that you ask? Because you can't predict the future even though you know that everything is caused by something else. You cannot tell me what I will be eating tomorrow and or when the pope will die. Because of this, even if no free will exists, everything is the same as if it did.
