That............. makes a surprising amount of sense.

Wow... this actually reminds me of Avatar, the Fire Nation prison that was in the middle of a boiling lake. Less cooperative prisoners were often put in refrigeration cells called "coolers" for punishment. So the less cooperative prisoners got used to the cold and couldn't stand the heat of the lake, while more cooperative prisoners got used to the hot air around the lake and instead feared the coolers.

Pretty sure they put people in the freezers to keep them from being able to firebend.
But that was a good try. (It wasn't actually.)

Prisoners at Alcatraz were also given very good meals and allowed to return for as many helpings as they wanted. They found that when you let a man eat well, he is happier and less likely to cause problems.

That's actually crazy enough to work.

I see a lot of these comments about how prisoners should get "privileges" in return for being a good prisoner but isn't the point of being in prison to be punished?

The point of imprisoning criminals is to rehabilitate them and keep them away from the public, not take revenge on them.

I want to become rich enough to buy Alcatraz and turn it into my own supervilalin fortress.

I thought prison was rehabilitation not punishment
User avatar #36 to #32 - scowler (09/15/2013) [-]
One could say punishment is a form of rehab. You're not gonna stick your hand in a fusebox after getting shocked, right?

Forgive me for being stupid, maybe I should have paid more attention in geography, but what makes the San Francisco bay freezing cold? I thought California was a hot climate and a huge beach destination so shouldn't the San Francisco bay at least be a manageable temperature?
User avatar #19 to #17 - Hreidmar (09/14/2013) [-]
Southern California, yes. But most of California actually gets a cold current along it's cost. The waters in the Pacific coastal areas are generally 15-20 degrees Farenheit lower than at a similar latitude on the Atlantic.

If I had enough money I would buy Alcatraz and separate it into 2 distinct areas. 1 would be the sleeping/resting/eating/rec area and the other would be a nightclub. You could party for a full week, resting during the days. I have been to many 18-30 destinations now and this is exactly how you live, party all night and relax/sleep all day, but this would be done within the safety of a former prison, so no disturbing the locals, no violence because of plenty of security guards, live in doctors etc I've spoken to a lot of people about this idea and every single one would say they would go as long as inside was dressed up to not look like a prison. Might put up a kickstarter.

i think being raped during every shower would provoke any inmate to attempt an escape..
your thoughts...?

Yes, but I doubt there were too many estonians in Alcatraz.

Bitch, please. I'm used to sweltering hot Northern California; 110+ degree days for about two thirds of every year -- but I absolutely love that chilly San Francisco bay ocean at Baker Beach. So does my awesome dog, I could hardly get him out of the water. We swam for hours until my skin was bright red from the cold. 8D

STOP YOU'RE MAKING ME MISS SAN FRANCISCO

Because someone actually breaking out of prison and escaping wouldnt have adrenaline shooting through their body to counteract the shock of cold water
User avatar #69 to #68 - heartlessrobot (09/15/2013) [-]
That adrenaline won't last long, and neither will they once it wears off.
