"Road" is probably symbolic for like life or something

Q: Why did the chicken cross the road?
A: He was struggling with his battle with alcoholism and went to the liquor store.

I always took it to be a classic example of Anti-Humor by setting up what sounds like a joke, but then ending it with something mundane and unfunny, which can, in itself, be funny.

next time you steal something word for word credit your source.

yes...because vsauce totally came up with that interpretation of the joke all by themself...in fact they invented the whole joke....
User avatar #18 to #17 - houseofbrick (09/09/2013) [-]
I know you will never believe me, but I honestly have never seen that video in my life. I read about this interpretation on TvTropes several years ago.

you should watch his stuff then. its actually pretty good. also the line is like 1 minute in. maybe I shouldn't have jumped the gun so quick,
User avatar #20 to #19 - houseofbrick (09/09/2013) [-]
to be fair, it's a reasonable assumption.
#21 to #20 - ihatecarltonbanks (09/09/2013) [-]
of course. haha I mean an entire meme is based off of the idea that the chicken is an anti-joke.
User avatar #15 - jacencaedus (09/09/2013) [-]
oh lord, I knew about the thought of it being a metaphor for life/the after-life, but I have NEVER heard this interpretation

the jokes been around longer than cars. unless it means covered wagons or something that wasnt what the joke actually was

I remember when i finally got that joke. I was in the second grade standing at a urinal and went, "OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooOOOOooh! I GET IT!" The guy next to me funny and i looked at him and said, " I get it."
User avatar #10 - assdoreponyfucker (09/09/2013) [-]
comment number nine explained it the best. thus the anti-joke chicken.
#9 - anonymous (09/09/2013) [-]
It's not true, you know? It's not like your brother's teacher created the joke, so he/she has the last word about it... For exemple, chicken in Brazil does not mean "coward". It means "slut".

The joke means to make you expect a funny end, and just state the obvious and logic reason (To get to the other side). Its a non-joke.
#25 to #9 - anonymous (09/09/2013) [-]
i always thought it was a pun. to get to the the other side, as in the afterlife.
#29 to #25 - angelious (09/09/2013) [-]
no originally the joke was as the other anon said " a non-joke" people start to over think it and then you just say something that should be expected that nobody expects

like the how can you fit 5 elephants into a car?

3 in the back two in the front

its just over the time the joke became so well known that everybody started to expect the "to get to the other side" that people then started to overthink about it...

I think Vsauce did a video on something like this
