Don't have the power .. Do you realize that nations (save one) are not allowed to hire them as mercenaries because they're literally better at war than any other country? They're easily equipped to take on just about any country on the planet. The Swiss don't participate in war because they don't have to, not because they can't. They have a live and let live mentality that I admire.

Did you miss the part where I said just about any country? The Swiss could take on JUST ABOUT any country, and win. Besides being a fortress country, they're well funded, well trained, and prepared.

But back to my original point. Not being the world cop has worked out for the rest of the world, especially the Swiss. If the US could stop sticking it's nose where it's not wanted in the first place we would be a lot better off, and it's quite possible that the rest of the world wouldn't think so little of us. We've got entire cities in the US that are bankrupt, but we're too busy cleaning up other countries to focus on ourselves. I want it to stop personally. Yes, it's terrible that Kadafi gassed his own people, but in this case, we get to choose between a murdering psychopath in power and a murdering psychopath who wants to seize power, or OR we could stop flushing money down the toilet. These are the choices.

We still don't even know who used the chemical weapons. Even if it was Assad and not the rebels, and taking out Assad's government would stabilize the region (It won't, there's more than four factions competing just internally there, not to mention outside influences) the other people there also have chemical weapons. And we're going to get massive amounts of **** no matter what we do; if we go in, against the will of the international community, we'll be decried as trying to be the world police, if we don't go in, we'll be internally berated by the citizens who did want to go in. As long as the fighting is contained to Syria, I don't see how it's our problem. After all, the last time we went into a country where the leader was confirmed to have killed his own citizens with chemical weapons, it was Iraq.

And the oppressive overlord's opposition? A guy who has a video of himself skinning a man alive. There's a guy I would support all the way.

There is literally no good person to give support to in this case. Either one of them would happily kill hundreds of people to get what the want. Why should the US help them?

I'm just making the point that the only two groups in the region with enough support and manpower to actually take control after this ********* settles are murdering psychopaths. Either one of them would happily gas his opposition. We're contemplating supporting a man who has a video of himself skinning a man alive, so that HE can then be in power. Not one person I've talked to in my day-to-day life has felt the need to support a man who a) gasses their own citisens. OR b) skins people alive to make a point.

TLR. Both of these 'leaders' are murdering psychopaths who the US should not in any way support.

Good on you. Yes, wherever you go, that's where you go and what you do, but I don't think any troops should be deployed there at all. It's not going to stabilize anything and all that will happen is many more people will die. If you do go, make sure you don't "combat loss" your NBC survival gear or gas gear, like most of the guys that I know who went to Iraq did. The very first place the gas will be used next is the highest concentration of US troops, guaranteed. We have no friends in that region.

Nope. And it's still in debate whether reaching light speed is actually possible (not to mention that would still mean millions of years before we even reached another planet), and I also love how all of you people seem to think terraforming the entirety of Mars and developing a reliable method of sending people over in the millions is only an issue of a couple decades. The majority of our pollution and resource draining has occurred within the past 100 years, and it is only going to get worse and worse as our population continues to grow.

And who says what our "humanity" even is? It's just some concept we created in order to make us feel better about ourselves.

If we keep going, we'll eventually run out of reliable sources of food, water, and energy, all of which would result in another world war, resulting in the further destruction of the planet due to bombing of ballistic, fire, and chemical nature, rendering even more territory unusable (especially if nuclear weapons ever came into play, which they very well might). Basically, at some point the only thing that will matter is survival, and your precious concept of "humanity" will be a thing of the past. To say that the solution to over population is to continue preserving every being so that we can continue growing is a pretty ******* stupid idea.

Arsenymous, I don't know you nor been in this conversation. I respect both your commitment to your country and optimism. However, blind optimism changes little to nothing. Historically, it's optimism that's tempered with the harsh hammer of reality that enables (subjectively) general positive change. For example, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was able to inspire change with his optimism but it wasn't simply that optimism that changed the status quo, it was the application of that optimism within the bounds of the world they (African Americans and supporters in this case) lived in. They made people aware of the problems of the system, but in order to do so, they had to be aware of both the problems created by the system and how the system functioned to a fairly deep degree.
I'm not telling you to discard your optimism, but rather apply it to the world in which we exist rather than an ideal world. After all, ideals are both metaphysical and not universal.

No one wants to invade Syria because they are killing each other, we want to invade Syria because somebody used chemical weapons; more specifically, sarin. It's a ghastly weapon of mass destruction that kills its victims in an extremely painful way, and it's banned by international law and for good reason. There's no point in having a ban on chemical weapons if we're not going to enforce it. Using sarin gas on civilians is not only a crime against international law, but it is a crime against humanity. Whoever is responsible is a war criminal and they need to be found and brought to justice so that this **** doesn't happen again.

Couldn't have said it better myself, glad some people understand the whole point of this.

I knew immediately when hearing this story I was going to have a few arguments with people.

I didn't bother to walk up to the stranger, but she uttered the words, and translated to the best of my abilities. ''Have Syria got oil, or is America just getting bored by not shooting at people''.

I cringed at the stupidity...

>US intervenes in Syria
>OMG America's being wurld police again, just gotta butt in everywhere don't you, gotta wave that dick around
>US doesn't intervene
>Guess America's just gonna sit by while people use chemical weapons on citizens, so much for enforcing international laws, guess that's legal now

That's all that's going to happen. It's what always happens. The US always gets **** on, no matter what.

You just compared Syrians to fish.

The thing you all don't understand is, if Assad is permitted to use CW we are practically telling the world that we are allowing it, the fear of America dissipates, people everywhere will stop following our rules, pushing the boundaries more and more. It is not only about the Syrians.

All that being said, lets not go to Syria, tis a silly place.

Syrian is in the middle of a Civil War and Obama is going to intervene to help the rebels(which is mostly al qaeda) and everyone in Syria hates the U.S so there's no ******* reason to intervene.

it has nothing to do with Syrians bombing Syrians and us involving ourselves with that but Syrians gassing and using chemical weapons against Syrians. Strictly against the Geneva convention and he's pushing for a international response to something that 99% of the countries on this planet greed not to use. And congress already agreed to that response when they decided to sign that treaty decades ago.

why is it pointless to kill someone under water?

death is quite permanent under water too, so i don't think it would be ineffective

That's a good point. though, I imagine 7.62X51mm could be fairly dangerous a few meters underwater.

One would think, but not really. I'm fairly sure it's less than a meter or a meter tops from point of fire or surface.
