I think it started out as one of those things where it was like having a secret handshake with people in the same fandom, like it wasn't necessarily funny but it meant someone had played the game which was really underrated for a while, and people who never had played portal heard friends say it or something and misunderstood but tried to pretend they knew what it meant to fit in. It reminds me a lot of how people bitch about how hard the water temple is even though it was really just a pain in the ass cuz of the boots.

you forgot the part where it leaks into "real life" like products (shirts, shoes, bags...), people talking about it in real life to people that don't even know about the originial joke (mentioning the cake is a lie in a classroom), and other things of the sort. I think that was a few years ago, now once the meme start getting posted on facebook is over, not because the people making the same joke for everything, it's because the people who saw it first in facebook, don't know what the **** is going on an just make a total different joke with the same meme till the point where nobody can remember what was the original idea.
