The homeless quote got me. I went homeless in high school.

Now I live in the US and volunteer with homeless folks.
Pic related, this is Frank from Austin, Texas. He never asks for money, just food or shoes. His signs are golden.

New Yorkers go with almost anything, me and my friends had a mini contest of getting the most high fives in from random strangers. No one told them to **** off or gave them a strange look, by the end off the contest they each had 30+ highfives. However never ask a New Yorker how to get anywhere, you have no clue and so do they (at least 80% of the time).

"Keep your powder dry" is a saying used around the early 18th to late 19th century.
It would be most commonly used by armies or navies utilising flintlock/caplock weapons.
These weapons required gunpowder to function (flintlock using a small bit of powder down the barrel and in a small recepticle just above the trigger, caplock not needing the recepticle as the charge inside the barrel was ignited by cap instead). Gunpowder does not ignite when wet.
