Because they've completely abandoned everything that made the original DS great. The reason that Dark Souls was so successful is multi-part, and the reason that DS2 looks like it's really gonna suck is that they're completely disregarding all of those reasons.

1. They made a game that was focused.
DS was designed to be a specific sort of game, the sort that kicks you square in the balls and makes you beg for more. It was designed to be precisely what it was, and to appeal to the sort of people who loved a good challenge. It knew EXACTLY what it wanted, and it did it perfectly.

2. Proper marketing
DS was marketed reasonably. They didn't spend billions of dollars to wave it in everyone's face, and they relied on the quality of their game to do a lot of the talking for them. They marketed it to the right audience, and they did it responsibly, so that the game would easily be able to recoup the costs.

3. Reasonable expectations.
The DS creators (Unlike some I could mention) had realistic, reasonable expectations for how well their game was going to do. For instance, they were celebrating hardcore when they hit 2 million sales, while other companies are going on about how 'the franchise is now dead' and 'this game was a failure' when their games sold over 6 million copies.

Now, here's the thing. The developers have released press releases and done interviews in which they've essentially said that they are throwing everything that made the original Dark Souls a success straight out the window, and are (and I quote), "We're treating this as a massive, massive AAA title. We're going to go in guns blazing and hope to god it works", among several other things (which I'll discuss shortly), but that's the most important bit right there. It shows that they've forgotten exactly WHY it is that the original game succeeded, and how to actually make a proper game in the long run. As it stands, they've tasted success and are thirsting for more, discarding everything that (cont'd)

the reporters wh played the demo said it was harder than the original. smarter AI's or something and hopefully whatshisname will be doing some parts. i hate that guy for putting those archers in anor londo. but there WILL be more of that damn near impossible ****. go spend an hour or so on the darksoulstime channel. it'll make you feel better. and in any case, DS2 might not mark the end of the series. maybe a DS3 will come out thats better than the first. who knows. point: dont stress too much over it.

made the game great in the beginning. Now, as I listed why DS1 was put together well, I'm going to point out exactly the mistakes they're starting to make with DS2.

1. They've completely forgotten about the advertising part, and are pumping billions into it, taking the general AAA route of spending stupid amounts of money, then scrambling to recoup the costs through sales. As the marketing director said,

"...we're investing more in it from a marketing perspective. With Dark Souls and Demon's Souls, it was very focused, small-scale. We're treating this as a massive, massive triple-A title."

Right there, in a nutshell, is what is wrong with this game's development. It's like they've completely forgotten how they succeeded with DS1 just as it happened. Dark Souls succeeded because it was hard as balls and it knew exactly what it wanted to be. What it's TRYING to be, I'll get to shortly.

2. They're trying to make it appeal to everyone, changing the game style in order to try and attract as many people as they possibly can.
Here's an expanded version of that quote from before:

"We're going to go guns blazing with it, and hope to God that it works. We're going after people who love and adore Dark Souls, while hopefully widening the net a little. I'm not saying that every Skyrim player's going to be jumping on Dark Souls, but it would be nice if some of them did. It's a different game, sure."

And there it is. They're trying to usurp Skyrim, essentially. They're trying to appeal to absolutely everyone ever as opposed to making a great, focused game that works well on its own merits. It's set its sights on Skyrim's RPG crown, and we're the ones going to suffer for it.

As it stands, I'm really not holding my breath for it.
