Cool fact:
Reason why fish can't breath out of water. Their gills (made from multiple fleshy pads in series) create a large surface area underwater which allows oxygen to easily diffuse across into their bloodstream. When a fish is above water these gills collapse without the water's buoyant force. This means that all the pads stick to one another resulting decreasing the surface area of the gills to a point which fish cannot diffuse oxygen at the rate required to support respiration and then die.
