I was told that the reason this happens is because your body is at a stage of deep relaxation and your heart beat slows and your body thinks you are dying so to speed to heart rate back up it jolts you

I only experience this when I'm trying to sleep in school. Not a single place place else.

And then there's Sleep Paralysis.

It's like someone has a grasp all over your body and the only part you can move is your toes.
This is followed by hearing weird noises, the feeling of being watched by someone and the presence of evil.

I'm not sure if this is true or not, but I've heard it's called our 'monkey falling-out-of-a-tree reflex.' It happens when we feel off-balance or experience a falling sensation. It is there so that when we as less physically developed 'monkeys' would fall asleep, we would wake up to react if we fell asleep on a branch and fell.

My first reaction was, "There's a name for that?"

I suppose it makes sense when I think about it more, but still that was my first reaction.
