Fun fact about Neil deGrasse Tyson: Not only did he appear in a comic alongside Superman, but he assisted DC Comics in choosing a real-life star that would be the appropriate parent star for Krypton.

I didn't understand what racism was until I was in the 5th grade when a teacher explained it to me because of reasons.
I knew what the holocaust was etc. I just didn't understand that people were capable of hating someone based on who gave birth to them.

The biggest irony of this is that he implies parents teach these behaviours to their children, yet these behaviours had to have been learned in the first place to be taught.

In short, yes, children can be superstitious because it had to start somewhere
