I am a cashier for a grocery store, and I am just
working away when a mother and son come up to my
register, The mother is in a hurry so I try to go quick
scanning and bagging her items. The mom then tells
her son that he has until I am done scanning the
items to pick. out a candy to buy. He starts looking as
I reach We items... looks at everything when I only
have 2 remaining.. starts to look at the gum at the
end of the aisle when I am on the last item.. "You
aren' t going to get any candy!" the mother says. I
scan the last item and bag it as the kid grabs a pack
of gum and throws it. It slides across the entire
grocery belt, scans and slides into the open bag, We
att cheered. MLIA

Dynamic friction allows the object to keep sliding by only skimming across the surface

The person who posted this may have left out the word "rolled". That or a combination of smooth plastic and only had to slide a very small distance before reaching the scanner.

I've thrown down a pack of gum on one before and it slid, the plastic around the package usually is enough for it to slide

A lot of the rectangular shapen flat gum packs are covered in plastic which makes them optimal for sliding across the rubber belt.

I did in fact work as a cashier at a grocery store, and items do slide across the belt! It was my entertainment on the job.

Could be packed in some kind of smooth plastic or atleast have a slippery surface, or it could be rolling..

There is no joke.

It's just a cool story.

I work in a grocery store and I'm calling ********. The UPC would have to be facing one of the two scanners, and it would have actually had to have scanned, which sometimes takes forever because the scanners like to not do their job sometimes.

I work in a different store and can say with certainty that there is nothing more sensitive than a brand new scanner.
