There is a difference between disciplining a child and "beating the **** out of them". Spanking a child or lightly smacking them in the head is considered acceptable where I'm from, as long as it is used as a last resort and the child is severely acting up. Some children simply do not respond to being verbally disciplined. I very rarely needed to be physically put back into line but when I did I learned very quickly. My youngest brother on the other hand will only respond and behave to threat of being spanked or smacked, he simply won't learn, not because my parents are bad parents, they had 3 kids before my youngest bro who have turned out completely fine with no behavior problems. Some kids just do not learn from being scolded verbally.
