Actually it was expected that as a man you should have been married at the age of 18 until the late 1800's. *is a historian and works at a pioneer village* Girls were to be married at the age of 16 and if a girl was not married by the age of 18 she may be considered too old by many men nearing 18 and they would avoid marrying her as much as possible due to the fact that shew as only two years older than the expected age. *themoreyouknow*

Not quite 28, but yeah you're right lol. People did live until the later ages of life - it was only 200 years ago after all. Consider the fact that neolithic man lived to the late 30's early 40's we're dealing with a time so close to present day that you had people in their 60's and 70's commonly. ^^ It was just how they worked. At the age of 14 a boy left home to learn a trade and by 18 they should have either mastered it or been very close to mastering it.
