i hate when people complain about space exploration being too expensive. Only 3/7 of one penny of every tax dollar goes to NASA directly for funding.

No, but they are no longer sending shuttles into space. I heard something about them talking about colonizing mars though. Like there were some kind of sign ups for a shot at being one of the lucky few that get to go through the training for a shot at going to mars.

It makes me sad that this is how the game must be played. Why can't the people in charge be people who want to explore space too?

The Mars one project is a ******* joke. They want to send pods that you'll die in like rats. If you want an actual colonization project, it can't rely on BILLIONS OF PUBLICLY DONATED DOLLARS. They are literally just hoping someone will give them billions to send people in tin cans. A proper effort would send a team of systems engineers, doctors and medical researchers with the most advanced technology we can. Mars One is a sick experiment.

Let me explain it for the people who don't know what it is. Mars One is a project that aims to establish a human colony on Mars by 2023.

Anyone can apply for a fee that goes from 5$ to 75$. This does not grant you passage though, after the application people will undergo more 3 rounds of selection.

This voyage to Mars however, is a one way trip. Nothing will be coming back to Earth, what goes to Mars will stay in Mars, and whoever reaches the planet will die there, whether it is from complications or old age.

After the first manned trip, that will carry four people, the Mars One Project to send an extra four people capsule every two years.

Nah, capsules can be landed with an amazing precision with the right calculations. The following capsules will be landed near the first landing site and then be attached to the other modules using rovers.

Supplying several colonies on a planet would be too unpractical for what they are aiming for.

I don't have much belief in this. To think that amateurs could creatively solve occuring problems better than professionals is just, yeah. And it will surely be some legal problems along the road. No, it's not gonna happen. Not in 2023, and not with this idea.
#77 to #73 - pwnmissilereborn **User deleted account** (08/18/2013) [-]
Honestly, if by professional you mean government agencies, don't expect them to show much effort in space exploration now. We are past the Cold War, Space Research no longer contributes as heavily to military interests as it did then and so Russia and the US are dropping it now.

Anyway whoever had planned it would make it a permanent mission, return trips are far too unpractical with the current technology. This isn't the I.S.S. or the Moon, while being out of the Earth system, and thus way further than any of these two, Mars also has an atmosphere and a stronger gravity, which makes a return trip with a payload of that size really unpractical.

Although I do feel it is strange that a random non-profit private company popped out of nowhere and wants to establish a colony on Mars, and I'm also a bit skeptical about the success of this mission.

User avatar #45 to #34 - Whetstone (08/18/2013) [-]
I feel like the best qualifiers would probably be people who live in desert climates. Because I live in a hilly forest filled area, I know for a fact that 1 year of not having that would drive me insane. Although there is still wildlife to a certain extent in deserts, it would probably be more adjustable for those people to be on mars (If you take away the being millions of miles away from your home planet and having to wear a special suit every time you walk outside part)

No, your logic is all ****** up ***** . It will take 4 minutes for your request to be sent to Earth and 4 more for the Earth internet system to sent data back. That doesn't mean that you will only receive one frame of data, where the **** did you get that? Once they get the request, they will start sending data immediately, meaning 8 minutes after you wish you could be watching porn, you actually could be watching it without it even buffering or anything. A one-way trip to Mars doesn't sound too appealing. Some might want to do this to be immortalized in history or to do what no one has done before, but the idea of not being able to come back--and at such a high risk of death--is a deal-breaker. You'd be missing out on so much Earth has to offer, especially if a qualified applicant is relatively young.

User avatar #5 to #4 - celestiasbeard (08/17/2013) [-]
Oil is made from the remains of living or other organic matter being compressed. Since the only evidence of life on mars known right now is it being in early stages of being born in the form of bacteria it is highly unlikely. Thing is bacteria can also form as a sign of something being long dead and as a sign of life finally coming to an end so it's either barren of oil or is a black gold mine. Still going with option one though.
User avatar #6 to #5 - sanguinesolitude (08/17/2013) [-]
I know what oil is, and you clearly also know that mars may have had life at one point. Perhaps a few billion years ago it had life that slowly died out as the core cooled and it lost its atmosphere. Then the duststorms would have scoured and baked the landscape, hiding most signs of life. If we go there, maybe we can find out.

I am not saying it does have oil, just acknowledging that saying it doesnt is an assumption at this point.
User avatar #7 to #6 - celestiasbeard (08/17/2013) [-]
It would be an interesting thought but assuming that if there were organisms once on the face of Mars do you think their genetic components would make an oil drastically different then most oils we see today, considering that living conditions would be drastically different? Also now I'm imagining a Mars scientist looking at Earth and just thinking about it the same way we now think of Mars, that it's just a wasteland.
User avatar #25 to #7 - jdeezifer (08/18/2013) [-]
i think it would be the same oil if the lifeforms that used to reside there were carbon based.
User avatar #8 to #7 - sanguinesolitude (08/17/2013) [-]
hard to say, i mean depending what the organic matter was made up i suppose it might be a different type of oil, and also given the very different conditions on mars since it might have hypothetically deposited it is possible it would have changed chemically, or had some compounds evaporate without atmospheric pressure. I dont really know enough about Mars, oil, or its formation to comment intelligently on it.

i havent been able to bring myself to play it since my first play-through. I literally raged for weeks.

heres some of why i hated the ending
oh no i hated the ending too. Tali moment came before and pissed me off and then i settled in and was royally pissed off by every aspect of the ending. That the choices you made earlier dont matter at all. that the earth is nearly destroyed but now has billions of aliens many of whom cant eat earth foods and cant make it back to their homes. that the citadel was a reaper all along WTF then why did Sovereign have to activate it if it was the nerve center and sentient the whole time? Why after choosing my own way in every situation before did i just sit back like a bitch and do whatever the star child said. Why the **** was there a child in my dreams who ended up being a reaper. Where did the elusive man come from? Literally why the **** is he here, it adds nothing to the story and makes no sense at all. Why did all three choices suck equally and not make sense. How did the normandy escape the explosion of the mass relays? to do so meant they had to run away like bitches before the explosion went off, meaning they were cowardly running away without me having warned them. That after so much build up going around the galaxy, the solution is to shoot a colored pipe.

The entire universe you have come to love is over, mass relays mean you cant travel between distant worlds without spending tens of years doing so. The billions of aliens will starve and die, or fight bitterly over the ruined earth, forever unable to make it home to their planets hundreds of light years away. Colonies like sanctuary will die out, suddenly cut off from the rest of the galaxy. The entire quarian fleet who's planet you returned to them (well i did at least) will never be able to go there now. Etc. etc. etc. Not only was it incredibly unsatisfying, but it just didnt make sense and wasnt explained.

The ending didnt answer any questions... at all. It turns out the advanced AI is basically an idiot and his reasoning makes zero sense. Nothing gets wrapped up, the universe gets thrown into turmoil, and we are supposed to be satisfied. Worse still it basically closes the door to being able to have a sequel since the cool part of being able to bounce around the galaxy is gone with the end of the mass relays

I have to go now so it was nice discussing this with you and I hope BioWare has the decency not to let such a gaming master piece end so horribly...
#119 to #117 - shadowbreech (08/18/2013) [-]
A few details to correct (might help you). The kid you see was just the form the catalyst took for your convenience, based on the real kid who you couldn't save at the start (thus the nightmares). The elusive man was somebody who discovered the reapers and wanted to control them. He was pro human to radical levels and ultimately went crazy when he underestimated the control reaper tech would have on him. I think the Citadel wasn't a reaper, just one of their toys. They wanted to be a myth so nobody would've spent millennia prepping for them. They only killed advanced civilizations. in the DLC, you Promethean crew member mentions Quarians and Salarians but they weren't killed off. It was to limit how far technology grew so synthetics wouldn't kill off all organic life in the universe. But still, the **** your choices do as we say ending was a horrible thing to me. But as for the Mass Relays, who knows. Maybe they have keepers on board for the event an organic made it to the control center and chose one of the options that were already there, maybe there was a reaper back up plan...
I'm saying there is room for them to BS a ME4. I find that if you get in a tight spot (especially in stories), BSing can get you out of it so hopefully somebody at BioWare has that skill...

the world isnt all black and white child. I picked her all three games, and then got to the final one and when we get back to her planet, which i have managed to return her people to she takes off her mask and we get excited for the reveal 3 games in the making... and they dont show her. So still happy her people are saved from their deep space sojourn we return to the ship, and are insulted by the creators who for some unknown reason passed up the chance to show us her face in the one place she could safely be without her suit, and instead give us a crappy stock photo that has been poorly photoshopped. Its the ultimate insult to those who chose tali. They kept it a mystery all 3 games, so when they didnt show you her face on her world, whcih would be the logical reveal, you assume they are going to keep the mystery going. And then instead they show you a piss poor 10 minute project by an intern. Either reveal her and do it right or keep it a mystery. pissed me the **** off because she was my favorite character.

LOOK AT HER GODDAMN HAND LOOK AT IT.
#113 to #111 - shadowbreech (08/18/2013) [-]
If the mystery of Tali's face was such a huge part of the game for you... I don't know. Maybe I just cared more about the ending where no matter what you do, the basis of space travel is ruined for the galaxy, thus separating all soldiers from their families, I've heard controlling the reapers still leaves earth destroyed, and Commander Shepard is "dead." I hope the ending where the old man says, "Ok, one more story," goes with the N7 chestplate inhaling to mean we'll get a ME4. I've ranted off topic, the Tali BS didn't faze me after everything else about the game.

I couldn't disagree more with you.

was supposed to be a question. I chose tali all three games and was very unhappy about mass effect 3. Especially since i was able to make peace between the quarians and Geth, and get her back her homeworld. And then we were there, she took her helmet off and I was excited... this is going to be the big reveal. 3 games, hundreds of hours later this is the logical moment to show me her face. And they dont, so I was like ok thats fine keep the mystery alive... get back on the ship and there is a ****** photoshopped stock photo in my cabin. So the bastards decide to "reveal" her face, but not where they should have and in the most insulting ******** way imaginable to the fans.

*a stock photo

I didn't know it was the stock photo. I understand your point saying that they could have put more effort on Tali's looking but I still think that her character is the best.

you enjoyed not being able to see her face, and then have a stock photo in your cabin.

Is that a question or a sentence?

**** you, Tali is the best.

I also picked her all 3 games, which is why mass effect 3 pissed me off.

In case you didn't know, Tali's face is shown in ME3. Sure it's just a picture, but shut up.
It actually pissed a lot of people off because it's just the stock photo on the left that's slightly edited.

thats what pissed me off. i was standing on her goddamn planet. the one facking place in the universe she could take her mask off. She takes her mask off and they dont show her face. So i'm like ok fine keep the mystery. And then she gives me the goddamn stock photo.

They could've done so much better. That's why we're so angry. Yea, this woman in pretty... But it just doesn't feel like Tali

Yeah i love tali, she was my favorite, and mass effect 3 made me rage with that move.

Any recommended routs to go down actually? Like if you think a specific play route is neat or something that I might enjoy?
User avatar #22 to #21 - sanguinesolitude (08/17/2013) [-]
not really, i mean its all about choosing your own play style. Be kind or brutal as you see fit. I have heard the female voice actor if you choose female as your character is really really good, but i have only played as the guy. I plan on replaying some day with femshep (female shepard.)

anyways i am off for the night, but i'm gonna friend you because you seem fun

Good timing actually cause I have to get off too, hope to talk to you again.

I actually have them on my computer but never got around to playing them. Since you and the majority of the internet recommend it I guess I can finally get around to playing it in a couple days.
