I'm not a huge expert (only on the third season of Avatar, no spoilers pls) but how is bending hereditary? I thought the cultures decided the bending, not the genes.
That might have something to do with it, but aside from the Avatar, I didn't think anyone was more or less genetically inclined to bend a certain element. Otherwise there would be all kinds of regressive genes mixing up the elements from when the nations weren't at war and the cultures could mingle.
The way I figured it worked was just that they used bending for what was useful. The water tribes are out in the ocean surrounded by huge iceburgs and **** , the earth kingdom is a dry place with mostly just rocks, etc. etc. Also people wouldn't try learning more than one element because learning one element required unlearning another, with the Avatar being the exception. That's how I figured it anyways. Just wouldn't make sense to try bending an element if there's none of it around, like spontaneously learning fire bending in the water tribe.
lets look at bowlin and mako. they are brothers by blood (as far as we know), but both can bend different elements. we know that their is some genetic factor to this, that is not related to their environment. why would they need to bend?
this tells us that bending by the time we are presented with it, is purely a chance thing. some people get it, some don't. its also apparent that by angs timeline, you cannot learn an element that you have no genetic tie to, because if you could people from all over the world would know bending in random location and air bending would still be a thing.
you are probably partly right about the environment gave humans bending originally, but this has nothing to do with location, per say, but more of the wildlife. we know that animals have taught humans how to bend (or so the legends say). the animals simply lived in these location, and human around these locations picked it up from them. how ever nature probably taught them techniques (residing water, freezing, metal bending, lightning bending).
They used the moon to explain how people learned the pushing and pulling of water bending, but they never even touched on how people learned how to freeze **** OR the thermodynamics it implies.
It is genetic but not everyone has the ability to bend. You couldn't have two waterbenders have a firebender kid, but if a waterbender and a firebender had a kid the kid could be water, fire, or not be able to bend at all.

I really would like an official explanation on that, in the series it's said that bending was learned from certain animals that are able to bend naturally, so, it would mean anyone that can learn how to bend...
Which opens up new theories, maybe the non-benders are just born on the wrong countries? What if Sokka was a firebender but never found out because he was only tested for water bending?... But I digress...
Bending is partly genetic and personality based. Parent's who are both waterbenders tend to have waterbending children but that's because their children have a waterbending attitude, It has to do with Jing, positive jing is when you are attacking, negative jing is when you are retreating, and neutral jing is when you are waiting and listening.
Airbenders focus on evasion and speed. Waterbenders use adaptability and versatility to power their Bending. Earthbenders use stubbornness and resistance. Firebenders use energy and aggression.
So basically Korra has the heart of a firebender even though she was raised in a water tribe which allowed her to master firebending easier than anything else.
I don't think it's genetic..there were twins in The Last Airbender and one of the twins could earthbend while the other couldn't. I think it's based on spirituality.
Can you explain why non benders can't learn to bend when the first benders learnt off the original source of bending (Earth = Badger moles, Fire = Dragons, Water = Moon, Air = Sky Bison) after being non benders.
I was getting angry because I thought you were implying that any bender can be born from any bender parent....
Then I kept reading and it looks like you know your stuff, have a thumb!
no,not exactly. if you have parents who where born in the fire nation and are both fire benders, then you will only be able to bend fire (unless your family has history of perhaps interracial like a earth bending gran gran and a fire bending grandpa.... or you are the avatar). however your aptitude and personalty will tell you how good of a bender you naturally can be.
but going back to the interracial topic, it would likely be a random chance that is affected by your personality and genes
But the fire nation was basically North Korea pretty much everyone had the same attitude, the firebending attitude, so if you are born and raised there in that society that's what you're going to learn, it's like growing up in a religious family odds are you're probably going to be religious if you were raised in that. However if to firebenders from the fire nation took off and went and lived in a water tribe and taught there kid to not be aggressive he'd probably be a waterbender.
highly unlikely. sure you can say that this is due to up bringing, but then why don't people from the water tribe know any other bending? they were not brought up in a totalitarian state.there had to be people like korra who had these mindsets of aggression, passiveness, stubbornness, unlike the water tribes general adaptability. why are there no other benders over in these parts? and before the war started the fire nation was not a war driven state. why where there no native pure blood fire nation people who could bend other elements? and even after the the war started, it is impossible to indoctrinate every person.
Im sorry, but it doesn't matter how much of a pacifist a person can be, they wont be bending air unless they have air bending blood in them.... hence why there are no more air benders in the show.
WHY IS IT THAT WHENEVER SOMETHIN G IS WRONG WITH THE CHIKLD THAT OPEOPLE ALWAYS ASSUME IT WAS THE WOMAN WHO CHEATED MAYBE THE MAN WAS THE IONE WHO CHEATED ON THE FAITHFUL WOMAN
I 100% agree. The man could have gone out and had sex with some girl. Then when his wife has a child he kills it and replaces it with the one that came from the other whore and nobody would know because they would look the same and they would be exactly alike and wait. this could never work or could it.....
It would not work the other way. I'm sure she would know something was up if she had a child that didn't come out of her vagina.
"Hmm, this one didn't come from me. But it has to have come from somewhere and my husband would not have been unfaithful. I don't remember anything about the 9 months of pregnancy that I must have had, or the day of delivery, but it must be my child"
DONT HAVE ASKED HIM IF HES STUPID CAUSE HES JUST EXPRESSING HIS OWN MIND. I CANT BELEIVE THIS SITE DOESNT GET WHAT OPINIONS IS. I ACTUALLY KNO WAT IT MEANS CUZ IM SMARTER XDXDXD
For those who doesn`t get it, bending is about genetics, but Korra(the kid) is the avatar, she can bend every five elements:
-Fire
-Earth
-Water
-Air
- And my Dick
Seriously, this is a tv show made for children. I don't want to ******* see it on a site made for adults. With other words, eat a salty dick OP. and no, I don't give a **** if I hurt your feelings, get over it cunt
I watched The last airbender on netflix for the first time last week.
It was great, but i'm always to these things. So when it's finished I have no one to talk with about how hot Ty Lee was
I know right?
I've done so many unspeakable things to her in my head to the point where parts of my brain are now breaking off and they're like ''wtf man was wrong with you''
I dunno, I think especially with fictional characters, you can't really wrong people for thinking there hot when they were designed to look biologically 18. You can like these things so long as you never make it real, in which case I think seek help from a therapist.
