People like this...
In about 20 years, the kid is going to hate them.
What if your parents had names you Pong? Or "New Coke"?
User avatar #155 to #6 - ilikebuttsex (08/08/2013) [-]
yeah but pong and dovahkiin dont really sound the same do they? dovahkiin actually sounds pretty cool and exotıc
User avatar #142 to #6 - skylerr (08/08/2013) [-]
They said that they gave him a normal middle name so that he could go by that if he wanted to. In my opinion Dovahkiin is a cool name.

if it got me free coke for the rest of my life i couldn't give 2 *****
User avatar #50 to #6 - subaqueousreach ONLINE (08/08/2013) [-]
Okay they named him after a character in the game, not after the game.

Also there are plenty of people with normal names who don't like them.

I know someone named Rhys who chooses to go by Connor because he thinks his first name is stupid. I was a little offended because my first name is Rhys. (I was named after Kyle Rhys from Terminator)
User avatar #88 to #50 - srapture (08/08/2013) [-]
"My name is Rhys, but you can call me Connor."
That sounds a lot more stupid than the name Rhys if you ask me.
#79 to #50 - owlbear (08/08/2013) [-]
So, mind if I take a taste of Rhys's pieces?

Sorry, I couldn't resist. I've been wanting to use that pick up line ever since I saw the first Terminator.
User avatar #81 to #79 - subaqueousreach ONLINE (08/08/2013) [-]
Go for it ;)

Don't worry, I dealt with jokes like that my entire childhood, my response was always "Reese are delicious and so am I"
#84 to #81 - owlbear (08/08/2013) [-]
Well, you know what they say. There's no wrong way to eat a Rhys and they melt in your mouth, not in your hand.
User avatar #56 to #50 - psykobear (08/08/2013) [-]
I have never met someone named Rhys and you managed to find two (yourself included).

But anyways, what I'm saying is that the child will most likely not appreciate his parents leaving something as important as his/her name to Bethesda.
User avatar #62 to #56 - subaqueousreach ONLINE (08/08/2013) [-]
Probably not at first, but things grow on people.

He can easily go by Dave if he wanted (kinda like how Robert can go by Bob).

If it makes you feel better the parents gave a lot of thought to the idea of naming their son Dovahkiin (like what impact it might have on his life regardless of how cool it is) and even spoke with a large number of family and friends about the matter before finally deciding. Apparently their daughter has a unique name as well, but I don't see any mention of it.
User avatar #64 to #62 - psykobear (08/08/2013) [-]
Ok. I can see that. I just know that I would have hated it if my parent had called me Pacman.
User avatar #69 to #64 - subaqueousreach ONLINE (08/08/2013) [-]
Yeah that would be pretty irritating.

But I always like people who get creative with names.

It's like how I'm planning to name my first son Jericho Cross Elkin. Initially I was going to name him Jericho Michael Elkin after my dad, but he didn't want me naming kids after him so I changed it to Cross which is the name of the main character in his novel (a sneaky little loophole).

Then Darkwatch came out and everyone thinks I'm naming him after that when really I just like the name Jericho =/
User avatar #71 to #69 - psykobear (08/08/2013) [-]
Yeah. It's just that Jericho is an actual name, so it's cool (nice choice, by the way). Most of the population would have never heard of Dovahkin, being as it's not even a real word. That's the main reason for my annoyance, but they can name it whatever they want.
#44 to #6 - hsawryt (08/08/2013) [-]
dovahkiin is actually a pretty cool name in my opinion...
User avatar #42 to #6 - dongmongler (08/08/2013) [-]
What if they just legally change his name in a couple weeks months?

Isn't that an option?
User avatar #43 to #42 - dongmongler (08/08/2013) [-]
*weeks or months
User avatar #31 to #6 - reican (08/07/2013) [-]
I know right? I'd just name my kid Gary, Gary Oak. Who would hate that? i'd teach him to get classy too.
User avatar #26 to #6 - KayRed (08/07/2013) [-]
People are named after fantasy and sci fi characters all the time, this is nothing new, and in twenty years, that name for better or worse will be apart of that adults identity, so I doubt the would want to get rid of it.
User avatar #57 to #26 - psykobear (08/08/2013) [-]
Yes, they do it all the time. But, when the character's name is something like (for example) "Ellie from The Last of Us," Ellie is a decent name. Dovahkin? Come on.
User avatar #58 to #57 - KayRed (08/08/2013) [-]
People name their kids Aragorn, nobody seems to have a problem with that, how is this any different.
User avatar #60 to #58 - psykobear (08/08/2013) [-]
Well, I have a problem with it. I know what I say doesn't matter, and I agree with you. But all I'm saying is that it is a ridiculous thing to do. Naming a child Aragorn is just as bad. They can do what they want, but I feel that the child may dislike it.
User avatar #184 to #60 - vigilum (08/08/2013) [-]
Aragorn is a name, at least. Naming your kid Dovahkiin is like naming your kid Ranger or Asian.
User avatar #194 to #184 - psykobear (08/08/2013) [-]
Heh... Ranger.
Walker and Texas Ranger from Talladega Nights.

K, so listen up. You're insulting me and my other nordic countrymen. The name was derived from our culture, so to say how stupid the name is basically is like spitting in my face. If they want their son named Dovahkiin then so be it. If the child asks them why he was named that, they will tell them their passion for the company they love. If the child contests this, I'm sure they'll reason with him. Who in the living **** are you to question their parenting? Where's the rage over people naming their children Drake from uncharted or Shepard from Mass effect? You pick and choose which names are okay since they fit your agenda and what you're used to. I sure as hell wouldn't want to be named Steve like every other cunt in the world. His name is unique and he'll be proud of it. Stop being such a whiny little bitch about what people name their kids. As said, it's nothing you need to concern yourself about.

Can't tell if you are joking or not. If not:

Ok, that's a lovely little paragraph over nothing. First of all, I did not insult the name. I do find it to be a stupid name, but that is only my opinion. Secondly, insulting you and your countrymen in what way? Thirdly, some people's parenting needs questioned. Next, Drake and Shepard are actual names, not a made up word (not insulting Skyrim, I love the game). I'm not choosing what's ok, I said they could do whatever they want, whatever. I just stated that I believed it was a poor decision. Also, there are other names in the world besides ******* steve and **** . "He'll be proud of it" I was unaware that the Nordics had developed the ability to see the future. I don't see how a comment saying that something is ridiculous is being "whiny little bitch." I'll concern myself over whatever I damn well please. And lastly, go **** yourself.

If yes:

Ha. Hilarious.
