I'm curious about something, how old are most people when they first read LOTR? I'm wondering because the post talk about high school and I read it when I was 10. It feels a bit young.

anon 'cus this sounds like I'm trying to brag.

I very first read it at about 11, but didn't really understand much of it, after watching the films at 15, went back, re-read it properly, everything just *******

I was introduced to Tolkien's works before I even began school. The Hobbit was read to me, and I tried to stumble through Lord of the Rings on my own, out of curiosity. For a kid it was confusing, but I loved the story in the Hobbit so much, I wanted to know what happened next. I'd say I formally read it and understood it entirely by 10 or before.

I was a big reader in elementary and our school library had the huge red unabridged trilogy. So in fifth grade, maybe age 10 or 11, I picked up the damn thing and just read through it.
My thoughts as I read? I had 0 idea what was happening, as it was pretty much the hardest book around. I just loved reading so I went through the words, pages, chapters. Somehow near the very last chapter something just ******* and the entire book suddenly made sense to me.
Have yet to watch the films in their entireties but I know I definitely should....
