It's illegal there too, on the federal level. It's only legal at the state level. Federal agents could still throw you in jail for possession if they chose to crack down.

Which is dumb, O think that federal and state law should at least come a basic consensus.

It's actually unconstitutional to have that federal law. It's in direct violation of the tenth amendment. They needed to amend the constitution to ban alcohol in 1929 for that very reason. Then in 1937, they passed the Marihuana Tax Act and chose to overlook its unconstitutionality.
That act was finally declared unconstitutional in Leary v. United States in 1969 (though for a different reason), but by then it was too late to do anything about it, it was already prohibited by other laws.

Whether legal or illegal, only the STATE governments have the right to make that decision. The federal government has overstepped its authority, on this and countless other occasions.
