Illegal... From some points of view. Washington state, smoking pot is legal at 21. Most jobs will still fire you for it, but, it's legal to smoke.

I am strongly against using alchohol(except for cooking) or drugs or weed (I know the difference) but I want weed to be legalized, that way it would lose it's "illegal" hype and people who buy weed then would be putting more money in to the economy.

There are 2 reasons that Marijuana was illegal.
1: In 1930 a man named Harry J. Anslinger made marijuana illegal by saying that it made white women want to sleep with blacks.
2: Big lumber corporations saw that hemp could be used as a cheaper source to manufacture paper and ran a smear campaign against the plant.

Because the very rich paper industry in the early 1900's knew that a hemp industry would destroy them, so they lobbied for the prohibition of Marijuana.

Fun fact for those who haven't seen, Uruguay is looking to be the first country to have a government regulated marijuana production/distribution business to take the profits from current drug distributors and reduce the number of people exposed to violent crime.

Technically not in Washington. It's kind of weird and confusing though.

It's actually unconstitutional to have that federal law. It's in direct violation of the tenth amendment. They needed to amend the constitution to ban alcohol in 1929 for that very reason. Then in 1937, they passed the Marihuana Tax Act and chose to overlook its unconstitutionality.
That act was finally declared unconstitutional in Leary v. United States in 1969 (though for a different reason), but by then it was too late to do anything about it, it was already prohibited by other laws.

Whether legal or illegal, only the STATE governments have the right to make that decision. The federal government has overstepped its authority, on this and countless other occasions.
