mhmm its the scene where he leaves his job, the guy he knocks upside the head is his "friend" who works with him and also ****** his girl friend earlier in the movie. good movie gets 2 thumbs up from me

I just learned this bit of trivia the other day. I found it pretty wild, since Gandalf is an allegory for Jesus.
User avatar #3 to #2 - sinonyx (07/30/2013) [-]
are you sure you're not thinking of aslan?
User avatar #4 to #3 - jokeface (07/30/2013) [-]
Both of them are, but Aslan is the more obvious one. Gandalf was subtle, but think about this:

>Let himself get killed to save the other members of the Fellowship
>Fell into an abyss of fire and darkness
>Fought a demon for a period of time
>Came back to life in a brighter, more powerful form
>Had a beard

It's also worthy of note that JRR Tolkien and CS Lewis were friends and colleagues, often exchanging ideas, which is why they have similar writing styles and themes.

then there is Gandalf's history as to why he made it appear that way, he is one of the original beings to first appear in middle earth
User avatar #5 to #4 - breadnsteak (07/30/2013) [-]
JRR Tolkien hated allegory, he like to write for the sake of telling stories not for propaganda for religion or politics, unlike CS Lewis who wrote most of his stories with Christian undertones
User avatar #7 to #5 - jokeface (07/30/2013) [-]
Hated allegory you say? Citations or it didn't happen.
User avatar #9 to #8 - jokeface (07/30/2013) [-]
Hmmm. Well be that as it may, it's impossible to deny the resemblance.

The entire universe is allegory but the specific stories within aren't so much. At times yes but not always.

Gandalf, Saruman, Sauron, and the head Balrog (and others) were actually all the same species, called Ainur, which were basically angels, created from the "breath" of Eru Illuvatar which is basically God.
Gandalf and those others I listed were actually members of the WEAKEST of these Ainur, belonging to a group called the Maiar.

Before the Maiar came to Middle-Earth, another group of Ainur called the Valar came to fight this dude named Melkor who was one of them who left in order to rule Middle-Earth by himself (similarly to Satan).

Hopefully I spelled all that right.

I knew some of that. I tried to read the Silmarillion a long time ago but it was too advanced for me at the time. I should try reading it again.
User avatar #15 to #14 - Pip (07/30/2013) [-]
its super complicated
User avatar #16 to #15 - jokeface (07/30/2013) [-]
Indeed. It's hard to read because it doesn't actually tell a story, or even a bunch of short stories. Just details and background information. I get the sense that the entire book is just a series of foot notes meant to be read alongside the main books, rather than by itself.
