I was always taught that placing your fork and knife on the plate to make a Q like shape was the way to show you were done with your plate.

Huh. Where I'm from, you crumple your napkin placing it on either side of your dish and place your knife and fork across the plate so that the handles face 5 o'clock and the utility ends point to 11 o'clock.
