For those who cant read it:
In the original pokemon red/blue, when you encounter your rival in lavender town, he asks you whether or not you know how it's like to have one of your pokemon die. At this point in the game, he no longer has his Raticate that he used in previous battles. Your rival battle took place abord the S.S. Anne. Your rival's Raticate sustained serious injuries from the battle... but due to overcrowding and confusion on the luxury liner, he was unable to make it to the pokemon center in time and his Raticate died. The real reason your rival is in Lavender town to begin with is to lay his friend to rest. Despite all of this, your rival never tells you outright that you are responsible for the death of his pokemon. He hides his grief and and instead channels that energy into the motivation he needed to become the Indigo League Champion. The death of his Raticate effectively destroys his impish, childhood innocence. Although he tells himself that you are not responsible, he subconsciously hold you responsible for what you did, which further fuels his ambitions. Tearfully swearing on his fallen comrade grave, he trains hard to finally defeat you and make it to the pokemon league. Mere moments after he becomes Indigo League champion, he is defeated...by you. Although it for a painfully brief second, he fufilled his promise to his fallen friend. In the end, He is scolded by his Grandfather, you get his praise. Throughout the game, you steal your rival's innocence, crush his dreams, and ultimately ****** away the love f his only grandfather. Oh yeah, he also doesn't have any parents, he's an orphan

I could have a Raticate fainted for the whole game and have it come back. That's why this theory is ******** .
