I've always understood why some other characters hated Harry until the end. Think about it, the Dark Lord supposedly appears and the 12 year old Harry Potter fends him off in Philosopher's Stone. That's neat, I guess. Pretty brave kid. Then in Chamber of Secrets Harry makes it his personal mission to save Ginny and slays the basilisk in the process. He's still cool, but did he really have to go out of his way to be a hero? But it was his best friend's lil sis and Harry did have some clues from Tom Riddle's diary, so he'll get another pass. But don't forget that this kid is also a rising star in Quidditch. I mean, geez, does this kid have to be in everything?

Prisoner of Azkaban really starts the downturn in the eyes of his fellow students. Very wanted man escapes prison? Of course Harry is interested and chases this guy, even though this mofo is probably chasing Harry too. Like, Harry thinks he's some great piece of wizarding **** he can ward off a dude that escaped the best prison in the magical world. And if that's not enough, his cocky ass reinforces it by being the kid who makes the best potronus and also the quickest. Now he's evolved: he's the kid you hate not only because he thinks he's the ****, but he actually is good.

Goblet of Fire: Somehow his name gets in a world competition, cheating the rest of Gryffindor and Hogwarts out of a shot at world fame when Harry already has it. Then the competition ends up being all about him at the end of the day, even though a student died.

Order of the Phoenix: Separates the entire school in who supports him or not. Suddenly he thinks he is leading an army revolution. Who the hell does this kid think he is? Not to mention he is Dumbledore's favorite and a class clown who passes because of his nerdy friend. Oh, and he makes out with a grieving Cho. Douche move.
Half Blood Prince: Confirmed cheater. His friend also a Quidditch star. Dumbledore's favorite even more. Really hated before Voldemort wages war on him.

"The kid you hate not only because he thinks he's the ****"
He never asked for any of that to happen. He wanted to be just Harry. He doesn't think he's the ****, he is probably the most modest hero in popular media.

I have a friend like that. He's incredibly modest and unassuming about his own talent for doing absolutely anything he sets his mind to, plus I've never met anyone who he can't get along with.

"I'm moving into a new apartment, it'd be fun to ******* build my own furniture"
"I ride my bike every once in a while, let's bike marathon length trips at 5 in the morning"
