Actually, the Royal Family still has plenty of responsibilities. The Prime minister still has to get permission for everything and update her once a week. She can end parliamentary session as well as declare war. She just chooses not to exercise her power because this way parliament gets blamed for everything that happens and she just gets to enjoy being the wealthiest woman in the world.

A law doesn't become a law until the queen signs the parliamentary bill and passes it. It was recently revealed the queen does have the power to veto specific bills, and several members of the royal family have used this power. So yes, they still have some degree of power. Doesn't really matter much anyhow, seeing as this country is slowly turning into a two-party system.

But you seem to have failed to see something. If you were to take out the hierarchy (and we're basing this on the assumption that they do this rather suddenly) it would cause unrest among the public. Suddenly things get a bit hectic. Nothing too bad. Presumably no big riots and possibly no small ones. But with public unrest and a bit of change that some people aren't comfortable with, it creates a very bad stagnation with the economy. For short term it just means that things get a bit bumpy and people are bit more tight with their money. (coupled with the loss of tourism from foreigners who would like to see the queen loss) Long term it doesn't do much (if any damage) but the people will feel it. A possible slight rise in everyday items or the pound getting a bit weaker for a while. It would smooth out though with enough time for people to get adjusted. So essentially they don't give back pretty much what they get, they place in a bit of stability with the public (though depending on current affairs this can vary to little if none to much).

When the Queen visited Ireland my brother and his school ended up in the front of the crowd in Cork. I was in university in England at the time and was trying to convince my friends over there that Ireland wasn't actually so small that everyone knew each other. BBC news came on during the argument. One of my friends bet me a tenner that I would recognise at least one person in the crowd. First goddam shot of the visit was my brother shaking her hand...
