Except in special cases.

Let's say you have a pawn in the 6th rank, and your opponent has a pawn in the second rank (your 8th rank) and one row to the side of your pawn.

If your opponent moves their pawn their obligatory 2 spaces as the first move and ends up next to your pawn, you can still capture that piece by capturing diagonally as normal. This is called capturing en passant and is the only way to capture a piece without landing on the square of the "taken" piece. (sorry if misspelled... I don't feel like looking it up.)

I think that makes the pawn an awesome piece... If only it could do it for pieces that weren't pawns, then it'd be an awesome piece.

I love jokes about chess.

Though this makes me wonder, why is the queen the most powerful piece?

But... he just turned around to face the king! Why didn't he just turn around, so that the queen was diagonally in front of him, so he could eat her..?

There is the En Passant rule, but I suppose that might still be considered diagonal since you still move diagonally while taking the pawn beside you?
