It was during the Great War (World War). In 1917, the Foreign Secretary for the German Empire, Arthur Zimermann sent a telegram to Heinrich Von Eckardt, the German Ambassador in Mexico. Saying that if Mexico declares war on the U.S, Germany will help them win back New Mexico, Arizona, and Texas. I know a lot more but I don't want to bore you with my picky details, but I hope this helps

The Zimmermann Telegram. In the First World War, Germany tried to get Mexico on their side against the US.

The highly anticipated verdict was announced late Saturday evening, when the jury’s foreman informed the dozens gathered in the packed courtroom that, in purely technical terms, mind you, Zimmerman had been cleared of wrongdoing, using her middle and forefingers on both hands to pantomime quotation marks while stating the words “not guilty.”

“Is George Zimmerman, juridically speaking, guilty of a crime? Under the precise stipulations of this particular law, no, he wasn’t,” said the foreman, adding, “Although, I think we all know what happened here, don’t we? Seriously, don’t we? And so we the jury find the defendant, George Zimmerman, you know, Christ, I guess I have to say not guilty? Do I really have to say that?”

It's very difficult to aim when you're having your head bashed into the concrete while someone is laying on top of you. Zimmerman didn't even know he killed Martin until the next day.

Also, your portrayal of what happened is mostly incorrect (not including your portrayal of the trial. That's completely incorrect). Martin was walking behind houses in a gated community in the rain. Zimmerman noticed him looking inside the houses and called the police due to recent break ins. While Zimmerman was on the phone with a dispatcher, Martin started walking towards Zimmerman. During the call Martin began running away towards the backgate of the community. Zimmerman followed.
