People are misguided if they think this was the government simply saying "Hurr, video gamers should be athletes cause blah blah!"

The main reason for this decision was the allow professional gamers overseas easier access to Visas in order to travel to tournaments in the US.

What the hell is wrong with that?

So now if you're out on a date with a girl and she asks what you do in your spare time, you can tell her you're an amateur athlete...

Am I the only one here that thinks the idea of "professional gaming" is absolutely ridiculous?
I've played games all my life and am as competitive as the next guy.. but come on.. these are ******* video games.

What's funny is that most people think of pro gamers as out of shape and a loser but iNcontroL is more in shape than majority of everyone on this site, has a hot girlfriend, and is pretty good in the pros

eSports? Professional?

I get both sides here, people spend hours and hours perfecting their craft. But still, it's a videogame..

Like, in any real sport, if you really want to try hard, you physically exert yourself. You're trying to achieve physical excellence (That ****** hard, so i've been playing videogames for a good decade or so instead).

It's kind of over the top now. These aren't sports, they're games. Right?

But, to be honest, this is "news" coming from the country that considers "extreme eating" a sport too.

"Sport" was always reserved for something with physical activity. I mean, i heard that golf got downgraded from sport to hobby because there isn't enough physical activity.

Invent a new term for it, ePlayers in eGames. Or just stick to a term that the world accepts and loves already, Gamers. Leave the the word Athlete for Athletes and let the Gamers keep their own identity.

Do you know why i am using it? BECAUSE IT MAKES MY GIRLFRIENDS PUSSY WET! Do you know how excited she was to finally see it? You don't.

And do you know how ******* hot it is in my room? I have my computer which heats up the place, my stanky ass farts, and me in general. And plus I was working all day at my ************* job so i could pay for that bitchin Hylian shield, the taz clock, Sonic bank, and that gumball machine filled with SKITTLES.

See my big ass pillow hanging over the edge? You do if you're not a faggot. That cunt destroyer of a pillow is decked out with WOLVES FAGGOT! And that black blanket? Made by my grandmother, she made that **** herself, and guess who's idea it was to make it? My grandfather. You know what happened to him? He ******* died, that day ******* sucked. I went camping, got up at 5 in the ******* morning, went fishing at Timothy Lake, catch nothing for 15 hours because I suck at fishing, and then get told we got to leave cause he is dying.

See that thing black thing to the left of the SKITTLES MACHINE!? It's over that yellow **** , wanna know what it if? OF COURSE NOT! IT'S A ******* CERAMIC PICHU MADE MY BEST FRIEND IN THE GOD DAMN WORLD! And it is inside a ******* NES case because **** YOU!

Honestly, I can see why people look at professional video game players not as athletes. But the difference is mostly cultural. In Taiwan, South Korea, China, most of the EU and Japan, professional video gamers are treated as professional football or basketball players are.

Just because a professional gamer does not spend hours upon hours of defining their body, they DO spend hours upon hours learning new strategies, increasing their micro (micromanagement for you non-professional gamers, or the ability to move your fingers REALLY fast in a concise way), and overall getting better at their game of choice.

If we are only going to consider those that are physically strong athletes, then why does the word athlete actually mean "contest"? Its a word originating in Greece, and it defined all those who participated in contested.

If you really believe that professional gamers are just extreme hobbyists, then step into a professional gamers shoes. Its not easy. It is intense, challenging and there is a growing industry for this. Don't let your preconceptions lead you to be a bigot because Xpecial isn't very buff, or FLASH isn't really that fast. Open your mind up and be a bit more cultured.

Technically, they are athletes, since they're highly skilled in something that requires stamina.
User avatar #63 - mostlyshits ONLINE (07/16/2013) [+] (1 reply)
I'm not saying gamers are athletes [nor am I saying they aren't], but they really do put a lot of time and effort into gaming, and I think it's cool that they are getting recognized for it. ******* 6 hour raids in WoW, jesus christ.

Must be 18 years old, on an actual team (sponsorships, manager and the works) and it's only for visa reasons for traveling to foreign countries and or booking a venue for a major tournament. The US government is just putting esports on a level of validity that the NFL and NBA etc have had
