People are misguided if they think this was the government simply saying "Hurr, video gamers should be athletes cause blah blah!"

The main reason for this decision was the allow professional gamers overseas easier access to Visas in order to travel to tournaments in the US.

What the hell is wrong with that?

"12 year old athletes" I'm putting this out there, as someone whose a big fan of the Starcraft2 professional scene there is some hard working people who try their best to be good at it, Koreans working at 10 hours a day just practicing, it's hard, show a little sympathy

yea the poor guys gets paid lots of money to play games all day
#38 to #32 - jinkazama (07/16/2013) [-]
As opposed to pro soccer players who train once a week, get paid hundreds of thousands of pounds weekly and cry like little bitches if someone so much as sneezes in their direction.

Also, pro gaming isn't as fun as it sounds. As a point of reference i play quite a bit of LoL. And any player will tell you how stressful it gets. It can really piss me off at times, any player will tell you the same. But i can take a break for a few days when it does, relax and come back enthusiastic and ready. If i were pro, **** that. No breaks, play it all day. You don't get a choice.

It's not as easy as it seems. Plus theres a lot of stress. You have to perform well consistently or you could get into a really bad spot.
#62 to #38 - John Cena (07/16/2013) [-]
If you're not having fun, stop playi- SHUT UP ANON__
#213 to #62 - jinkazama (07/16/2013) [-]
I already said, i take breaks when it stops being fun for me. After a few days i go back fresh and love it. But if i were a pro, i couldn't do that. It's not just fun and games ironically.
User avatar #128 to #38 - yetiyitties (07/16/2013) [-]
What. You make it seem like pro gaming is a bigger deal than pro soccer. That the average pro gamer is better than an average pro soccer player. I'm not even going to tell you how dumb you sound. You know it. I can imagine that pro gaming isn't easy, but come on.
User avatar #188 to #128 - Rolyat (07/16/2013) [-]
On top of playing the game. In the case of League of Legends team sit down and discuss strategies and watch old replays to see what went wrong or right in their play and how they can counter another teams strategies. It's more then just playing
User avatar #227 to #188 - yetiyitties (07/17/2013) [-]
Are you joking right now? That's what they do in American Football and other sports. Pro gaming isn't anything special from what you guys are telling me. All the people who thumbed me down need to put their fedoras down and stop comparing pro gamers to actual athletes.
User avatar #228 to #227 - Rolyat (07/17/2013) [-]
They both work hard in their own areas. It's basically the same thing
User avatar #229 to #228 - yetiyitties (07/17/2013) [-]
They both work hard is the only thing I'll agree with.
#204 to #188 - skaffanl (07/16/2013) [-]
Do you really think football players don't sit down, discuss strategies and watch old replays to see what went wrong and right in their play and how they can counter another teams strategies? Do you think football players just go on the field, kick a ball and go home again? I mean, I hate football and the ridiculous amounts of money the players are played but I do not believe they'll get rich THAT easily..
User avatar #205 to #204 - skaffanl (07/16/2013) [-]
I meant paid..
User avatar #208 to #205 - Rolyat (07/16/2013) [-]

Oh, then I apologize. I thought you were trying to "proove" that the average pro gamer is better than the average pro soccer player because that was the comment you reacted to. That is why I thought your arguments were so invalid.

So, professional sports players get paid for playing a sport, and make way more money off of it, and don't practice as much as professional StarCraft2 players, even when it comes to tournament sure they don't have as much physical play to go through, but they have a hell of a lot more mental play to go through.
User avatar #127 to #32 - missrainbowdash (07/16/2013) [-]
poor basketball players get paid millions to play a game, you can live off of being a pro player, but it takes flash or jaedong to get any real money off of it.

Lol is a great game and I love it but people act like its the only game out there that has a very serious mlg circuit. Starcraft's was long established before Lol's. Not trying to be rued just tired of people constantly think Lol is the only game with serious players.

I'm not acting like it's the only MLG game out there, I personally prefer SC2 tournaments over the LCS. But I'm just saying, it was recognized as a sport because of LoL.

large muscles with excessive body fat doesn't signify a proper physique.

if that were the case, then a typical emaciated kid that stands 6'0 and weighs 130 would also be considered "in shape." they're not.
User avatar #154 to #149 - usernameerror (07/16/2013) [-]
It also depends what you are trying to accomplish with your lifting or exercising in general. There's no such thing as a 'proper physique' because people trying to cut and tone look a lot different then people trying to bulk. Also have you ever watched strong man competitions? Not everyone there has six packs
User avatar #214 to #154 - FightClub (07/16/2013) [-]
i know but regardless of what they're trying to achieve, if they don't have a proportional physique balancing low fat with muscle tone, they're not necessarily "in shape." sure this guy probably is more "in shape" compared to the lazy and lethargic kids on this site, but in the general consensus, he isn't really "in shape," just robust

Honestly, I can see why people look at professional video game players not as athletes. But the difference is mostly cultural. In Taiwan, South Korea, China, most of the EU and Japan, professional video gamers are treated as professional football or basketball players are.

Just because a professional gamer does not spend hours upon hours of defining their body, they DO spend hours upon hours learning new strategies, increasing their micro (micromanagement for you non-professional gamers, or the ability to move your fingers REALLY fast in a concise way), and overall getting better at their game of choice.

If we are only going to consider those that are physically strong athletes, then why does the word athlete actually mean "contest"? Its a word originating in Greece, and it defined all those who participated in contested.

If you really believe that professional gamers are just extreme hobbyists, then step into a professional gamers shoes. Its not easy. It is intense, challenging and there is a growing industry for this. Don't let your preconceptions lead you to be a bigot because Xpecial isn't very buff, or FLASH isn't really that fast. Open your mind up and be a bit more cultured.

Must be 18 years old, on an actual team (sponsorships, manager and the works) and it's only for visa reasons for traveling to foreign countries and or booking a venue for a major tournament. The US government is just putting esports on a level of validity that the NFL and NBA etc have had
