the sun doesn't combust, combustion is the chemical reaction that consumes and restructures the chemical makeup of objects, generally requiring fuel and an ignitable gas to burn.  Stars, however, are enormous nuclear fusion reactors, and what they are doing is actually fusing atoms together and making new elements, Hydrogen to Helium, etc, etc, and since there is no oxidizing element in stars, they never actually "ignite" per se, instead they produce a tremendous amount of energy that pushes outward from their core at extreme heat, creating an outer coronal layer of plasma which looks a lot like fire but acts nothing like it.

I wouldn't call it combustion. As far as I know carbon is far more combustible than hydrogen and helium, which is what stars are made of. I'm fairly certain that stars give off light because they are at such high temperatures. Just about anything at say 5,700 K would glow. I'm sure that the nuclear fusion going on in the sun would add to it, but i would bet on the sun giving off light just because it's really fucking hot.

the only reason we arent dead or mutated is because of the ionosphere blocking most of the ionized radioactive particles, and the non-ionized radiation is pretty much just like microwave energy
