You know, I kinda see where you're coming from. I understand that art is utterly useless to some people, and I don't begrudge them for that. But let me ask you this: don't you think people need something more than just "a purpose" in life? Don't you think that they need to be more than just a tool to keep society running in shape?

I don't know about you, but if all I did in life was contribute to society and further the human race through my job (I'm studying to be a neurosurgeon), I'd probably go insane in a couple of years. I need something to occupy my spare time, something that's not work-related or necessarily contributes to society. For me, and many people, art is that thing. Music, certain paintings, books, all of these things are things I appreciate and use to break the monotony, because let's face it, if all you do is work work work, it gets kinda boring after a while. You gotta do some stuff for yourself once in a while, you know? Not just for society.

While I understand that this might not be your viewpoint - hell, you seem to have an extreme work ethic and I respect you for that - I think it's also important to understand that this is the viewpoint shared by a lot of people. In a way, artists do contribute to society in that they provide people with leisure time and entertainment, something that's necessary for most people to stay sane and in turn keep up their work rate. Hating them seems...I dunno, kinda pointless, to me. Though I guess there are those narcissistic assholes who pretend their mediocre work is deserving of pedestals, but those kinds of people exist in every walk of life. We just have to learn to ignore or deal with them. Well, that's just my 2 cents - or more like a dollar, given the amount I wrote.
#155 to #123 - anonymous (07/11/2013) [-]
No I honestly don't. People serve their purpose then die. If you contribute nothing to a society then get the **** out of that society. Find a hobby that will benefit you in some way. Collecting baseball cards, one day you can sell them. Looking at art doesn't benefit you. Your viewpoint is wrong.
User avatar #171 to #155 - absolyst (07/11/2013) [-]
I'm studying to be a neurosurgeon to help society, but at the same time I enjoy looking at art and listening music in my free time. And I'm actually working right now in a hospital for experience and as part of my education. Just because I enjoy looking at art and listening music doesn't mean I can't contribute to society, and that goes for most people as well.
#177 to #171 - anonymous (07/11/2013) [-]
You do contribute and in a very good way saving lives and helping people, the person who paints the pictures does not. I have a problem with them, not you.
#114 to #30 - thesinful (07/11/2013) [-]
Videogames, music, movies, etc. are all art on the exact same level as museum pieces. They all exist solely for the enjoyment of others. It doesn't matter if you're reading Macbeth, watching Scooby-Doo, listening to Sabaton, or looking at Van Gogh paintings. It's all forms of entertainment. A person's choice of entertainment is irrelevant and we should be thankful to others for creating works of art we can enjoy. Their products may do nothing for our bodies but they do much for our hearts, our minds, and our souls.

tl:dr You're an uncultured twat.

Normally I'm not a C.S. Lewis fan, but this is one of his better quotes:

“Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art.... It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things which give value to survival.” - C.S. Lewis (Irish/British Novelist)

Bertrand Russell, the second most famous philosopher of the 20th century also commented on the topic of artists. He stated that while the artist is just as likely to add true human value and experience to life as the Scientist, it is easy for the artists work to be seen as simple or stupid or meaningless, whereas with the Scientist, it is nigh impossible to see something like atomic deconstruction as stupid or meaningless. Ultimately then, where both individuals might pursue their job with equal vigor, one will be shunned by society and the other put on a pedestal.

#88 to #83 - anonymous (07/11/2013) [-]
Art doesn't give value to survival... art is ******* stupid, especially modern art. Oh great you painted a picture of a tree. Well guess what? I can TAKE a picture of a tree with a ******* camera. Art is outdated face it. If I a tree on my wall I will take a picture of one. Holy **** did he really compare scientists to artists? He's a ******* idiot if he did... scientists actually do something useful, artists do not. The artist deserves to be shunned and the scientists deserves to be praised.

#105 to #88 - larknok (07/11/2013) [-]
Such a strawman.

Art is everywhere my friend. Art is anything you see that reveals some small part of the beauty of the humanity and the world to you. Art has many forms. It may be Picasso's Guernica which depicts a civilian town obliterated by Nazi Bombers during the Spanish Civil War: You need to login to view this link

The gentle smile of the Mona Lisa might just convince you that happiness is found in the small things in life, not just the big goals: You need to login to view this link

In a more modern twist of things, here is the intro to the new Civilization V: Brave New World Intro, which I consider to be art: www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-C1Q_hjCXo

Obviously I'm not even breaking the surface. Art comes in many forms and in many ways. It is foolish to disregard all of that because you don't like one or two pieces a so-called modern artist tries to put on a pedestal.
#167 to #105 - anonymous (07/11/2013) [-]

User avatar #70 to #30 - poncakeforlife (07/11/2013) [-]
Why do you think people go to museums? Some people enjoy looking at art and get a sense of happiness from looking at it. The guy pretty much is doing something for the human race since his art makes some members of society happy. Sure, it's not that much of a contribution to society. But when you think about it neither is being a cop, since there is so much corruption going on these days.
#96 to #70 - anonymous (07/11/2013) [-]
Because that's what "high society" people do and they want to be accepted. It's what they associate being upper class with so they conform. People go to SCIENCE museums more than stupid art museums. The police officer does a lot more and is more useful to society. He protects the innocents while the artist gives people reasons to feel superior over others and be stuck up. "No man you just don't GET IT! It's too deep for you mannnn!"
User avatar #190 to #96 - poncakeforlife (07/11/2013) [-]
"Because that's what "high society" people do and they want to be accepted." people do"

Some people do, but not all. Believe it or not there are many people who go to museums because they enjoy seeing the work some people put into their sculptures/paintings. Just because you don't like it doesn't mean everyone dislikes it.

"No man you just don't GET IT! It's too deep for you mannnn!"

Again, not all artists are like this. Sure, police officers may contribute more to society than artists do, but have you ever considered that some people actually enjoy looking at painting or sculptures and not doing it for the sake of feeling superior? Have you ever considered that not all artists are people who draw dots on blank pieces of paper and call it "deep"?
#198 to #190 - anonymous (07/12/2013) [-]

Buddy, if you're talking about "furthering the human race", then you've dug yourself into a hole. Human race is at a stage where "furthering" it involves doing **** on a global scale. You'd need to cure a disease, or help make life possible on mars if you want an accurate description of "furthered humanity." Being a cop is no more "furthering humanity" that that guy painting pictures because the best you're going to be able to do is make your single city slightly more safe than it would be if you weren't there, and that's only IF you do it right. If you turn out to be a douche, then you'll actually SET IT BACK. If that guy ***** up his art...well so ******* what? It's canvas. The argument doesn't boil down to whose job will "further humanity" more...because the answer is "neither." It's a matter of "I think my job is more important than yours!" which is an incredibly egotistical way of looking at anything......especially if you're going to be a public defender, hopefully intent on proving those "angsty teenagers" wrong when they say all cops are dicks.

I will keep my home town safe and that is all I need. Keeping the public safe is a lot more important than painting stupid useless pictures so people can stare at for 5 seconds then feel like they're "cultured". My job is way more important than an artist's.
User avatar #212 to #211 - lolollo (07/13/2013) [-]
That's what I mean. Whether it's true or not, asserting it is nothing short of douchy, which is an issue when your future vocation is with the public, and involves a stereotype of "all cops are douches."
#200 to #182 - anonymous (07/12/2013) [-]
Every incident has 2 sides. You rarely ever see or hear the police officers side. 2 semesters ago my intro to criminal justice professor showed us a video of this guy in a car chase, gets out, walks away from the cops, then is shot in the back. Looks like he wasn't doing anything. That is the video the news used. THEN she showed us another angle of the same **** . Turns out the guys left side was facing camera 1 while his right side was facing camera 2. In the 2nd video you see the guy had a gun in his hand and was raising it towards an officer. Never judge these things too quickly.

Yes i'm 100% sure. Like I said I ******* hate art, I would be miserable if that was my profession. Modern art is even worse... and that's the problem with artists, they do almost nothing and still have the nerve to think they're better than everyone else. They're cocky narcissistic assholes.

Steve Jobs pursued the touch-screen easy to navigate styles of Apple products after sitting in on an aesthetics class; specifically the professor was teaching on artistic handwriting styles, a seemingly meaningless class. And value is subjective. Art might be meaningless to you (cause you're a whiny cunt), but I can only imagine how much skill is required to paint any of the ones in the content. Also I doubt you'll pass the psych test, being an over-opinionated narcissistic douche.
