Oh my ******* god I hate religion, if it weren't here we wouldn't argue about it for **** sake!

Also, if religion never existed, the world would be in a VERY different place. Probably less technologically advanced and quite a few things would be hugely different. That's not really something you want.

Doubt it

thats a tough argument to make. The church has rarely really supported innovations historically and kept people believing a fairytale over science for a heck of a long time.

religion has its uses, but as far as advancing us technologically i'm not sure i see it. As a social force it did provide cohesiveness in helping people get along in large groups, which i suppose helped us progress.

TLR xdoubt but maybe

Less technologically advanced? Have you never heard of the dark ages? You know the 400 year gap in technological breakthroughs, free thinking or advancement of any kind besides how much money the church had in it pockets? Religion has done **** all for technology except kill off any one who makes anything new

Algebra was invented by the Babylonians. Geometry was invented by the Greeks. Science was the ultimate goal in understanding how the gods did it. Without religion, there would not be science. BTW Roman Catholicism really isn't a religion, it's a massive cult that people were forced into under the threat of death.

Which culture developed what has nothing to do with religion, also Algebra is not a science, Geometry is not a science, they are breakthroughs, significant breakthroughs, but they don't factor in to this argument, also my comment was made regarding the fact that with religion existing we are living in a world that is potentially 400 years behind what it could be because of the dark ages

Babylon is the most beautiful city humanity has ever developed. Most of the ancient breakthroughs were by the Babylonians. They determined the amount of planets there were. In fact, when the Library of Alexandria burned down, THOUSANDS of years of breakthroughs were lost. Religion in the long run has accelerated science, and rarely suppressed it.

The Library of Alexandria was burned by Coptic Christians, and was located in Alexandria, Egypt and has nothing to do with Babylon, Babylon was a beautiful city but most advances were made by the Mesopotamian civilizations in short bouts, Babylon being the most successful.

And Muslims, and Romans...... Don't get me started on the ******* Pope. If there is any picture of Satan, he looks like the old Pope's.

have you ever heard of communism and how it suppressed religion while also slowing economic advancement (Atheist control)? guess not.

get of your ******* high horse, atheist. If Christians rule the world people die, yes, but don't you dare pretend like you atheists are superior or something. You'd do the same stuff.
we're all **** , and if you deny it, you're diarrhea.
User avatar #108 to #105 - lokischosen (07/10/2013) [-]
Communism isn't the same as Atheism, I'm not an Atheist, You are a twat.
User avatar #115 to #108 - sabcy (07/10/2013) [-]
all I hear is "We don't believe what they believe and we're can learn from their mistakes, so we're better" from atheists and I'm tired of it because if history shows anything, atheism kills nations.

my argument doesn't change.

all groups have some corruption. any leading group will attempt to terminate others.
User avatar #111 to #109 - lokischosen (07/10/2013) [-]
That has nothing to do with whether or not Theism or Atheism would result in a more technologically advanced world. Your argument is invalid
#117 to #111 - anonymous (07/10/2013) [-]
i won't even continue this.

A Monopoly is bad because the business will then raise prices and generally do immoral things. I think the same thing applies to governments, and even belief systems.
there needs to be a competition of beliefs, or else the leading belief system will try to stomp out others, and in some way or another, it will pause progression in some way. (so it can stay in power, it needs things to stay the way they are.) Sure, it's possible that a belief system could be free of corruption, but it will always seep in over time. from outside sources, or internal controllers letting the power get to their heads.

anon-out
