Reminds me of when the US spent 1 million creating a pen that worked in space.

And the Russians just used a pencil.

Except that didn't happen at all.

Paul Fisher used his own, private company to create the space pen. This was not requested by any government, and never cost the tax payers a cent.

Since the pencils were causing problems with their shavings (no, you can't create a contained sharpener, the sharpener itself can't leak the shavings, but a pencil itself will allow the shavings to slip past it in zero gravity) BOTH America and Russia adapted the space pen. Any and all space missions still use this pen to this day.
