Im fairly certain they use magnesium, not titanium. do you have any idea how hot it has to be for titanium to melt? and how absurdly expensive fireworks would be?

I love how smart people on FJ are. Genuinely. When we get awesome science posts we all come together to discuss things that are actually really interesting. Great job guys.

I was under the impression that Copper gave off a green color. In fact, I'm pretty sure of it, having conducted a flame test on Copper not more than two months ago.

I'm curious, what metal makes the purple colors in fireworks?

I always found the purple ones significantly more beautiful than other ones. They're not too bright and have a peaceful feeling to them.

Where can I purchase Barium?
User avatar #54 to #51 - masdercheef ONLINE (07/05/2013) [-]
You'd be better off getting copper chloride. It burns green, and you could probably get them in the camping section of a place like Wal-Mart, or just go to a camping store.

Sodium produces yellow/gold colors. Barium creates green, copper compounds produce blue, strontium salts give you red and titanium metals give you silver coloured sparks.

Other commonly used chemicals are carbon which provides the fuel, oxidizers which produce oxygen for burning, magnesium which increases the overall brilliance and brightness, antimony that gives you a "glitter" effect and calcium which deepens the colors.

Are you a fan of "I ******* love science" on FB?
User avatar #18 - maid (07/05/2013) [-]
However copper turns more greenish if the flame is too hot. Thats why blue is a hard color to make, you need to have another compound that makes the flame a bit cooler, that means sub 8-900 degrece C

think they have the copper and barium mixed up,not sure just know copper will make a green flame or turn a flame green when burned
User avatar #2 to #1 - luciuseternal ONLINE (07/04/2013) [-]
I think they are referring to Copper Chloride (CuCl) which makes a blue flame.
