if you want to look at a clever metaphorical expression and take it literally, then yes, you're right. Meanwhile, it wasn't spoken in a literal fashion, and so in fact linguistically you've misinterpreted the entire thing and made yourself look stupid.

That's like me saying:
"There was an air of stupidity on FunnyJunk today"

and you pointing out the painstakingly obvious fact that that expression is a metaphor by saying:
"********. The air can't be stupid. Get educated."

and thinking it'll make you look smart. It just makes you look retarded by missing the entire point of what was being said.

The book is set on a planet shaped like a disk held up by four elephants standing on the back of a turtle where: light travels at roughly 400 miles an hour, there is a wizards university who can see an extra colour and a secret organization whose whole purpose is the manipulation of time.
Its a world on the edge of the possible where normal rules of physics don't always apply.

Firstly why would I hold my pants. that's what a belt is for, assuming of course you meant trousers.

Secondly you haven't seen **** to judge without reading the book the quote is from, To explain: the main character in reaper man is Death (before you claim this is pessimistic/gothic bear in mind that despite the expected dark moments he is mainly a comic character), so all manner of philosophical dark comments and humour are bound to be a part of it.

Thirdly in regards to it being untrue, his Discworld series started with one parody book of the fantasy genre, The colour of magic. which BLEW UP and currently he has roughly 38 books set in this world: A world Which is flat, is on top of the back of 4 GIANT elephants (the fifth fell off orbited around and crashed at some point according to myth) Which in turn stand upon Atuin the world turtle (gender unknown). so other than occasionally being referenced as a goddess of some sort "Truth" doesn't have a lot to do with it.

Fourthly you didn't claim the "line" was pessimistic, you said that he was . Although I wont argue that he is trying to be philosophical as that would be presumptuous, especially given to his reaction to people claiming as such.

and lastly as much as I hate to break it to you the way you act as if being "educated" makes you better in your replies to other comments make you sound like a huge twat, the most important thing to remember when it comes to intelligence or education, is that while you may well be educated/learned in one subject, there are whole worlds of things you are completely ignorant of.

PS to answer you're question of "why would I care" if you flat out didn't care then why would you bother commenting then replying to all of these? or why bother reading this huge wall of text for that matter if you don't care?

Your intention was irrelevant, although an explanation would be welcome, as it is what is perceived of your actions and what you say that matters more.

"correcting?" my good man I am British and enjoy debate, for explanations sake lets state that rather than "correcting" you I was merely attempting to educate you through debate as you had misunderstood the quote in this content as well as the man who made it.

fair enough if you don't want to read the book or any of his books, I'm not going to deny that they aren't for everybody and if it isn't really your kind of thing you probably wouldn't enjoy it. however without knowledge of it bear in mind that you aren't in a position to make any kind of claims regarding either the author or his work.

lastly, and I do mean lastly as I really should be in bed by now I have work tomorrow. Don't apologise for not sharing my admiration for Sir Terry Pratchett, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, the only problem was that you had no information other than one single line to base an opinion on and generally speaking that kind of thing doesn't go well. I mean, just imagine something you're really passionate about being misinterpreted and contorted as if it where something completely different by someone who doesn't understand it, wouldn't you want to try to explain it to them?

Seriously. If you think it's pessimistic, say it's pessimistic. That's great, you're entitled to your opinion. But nitpicking what was obviously in no way a literal statement with literal facts is just being pissy.

You know this really makes me wonder, we think of light before the darkness, but what if it's light is the absence of darkness as opposed to the other way around? Again I mean this metaphorically and perhaps a bit literally.

So does it make more sense that light corrupted the darkness? The perfect void with no irregularities?

If the term: "nothing is perfect" is true, and darkness is simply "the absence of anything" and in other words "nothing", then doesn't that mean that the darkness, the empty void, is perfection?

In other words, if "nothing: is perfect, then nothingness... the darkness, is perfection.

It's all too similar to The Darkness video game series for me to come up with anything original, but it would make a great mentality for a supervillian or sociopathic evil genius villain.

After all, wanting to reduce the universe "Back to nothingness, the true utopia!" would make a good catch phrase.

exactly

Perfection is the void, in a world where nothing exists, because nothing is perfection.

Thinking of it this way explains a lot, like why nothing in our world is perfect.
In layman's terms, this concept implies that existence itself is flawed, and maybe even illogical. Depends on how deep down the rabbit whole you wanna go.

On Discworld, where Terry Pratchett's novel series takes place, light travels only a few hundred miles per hour due to Discworld's "embarrassingly strong" magic field.

Only partially true. Light on the discworld is very lazy light, which is also why it travels slowly.
