What I've read is that it affects memory and some cognitive abilities WHILE you're stoned, but there are NO measurable long term effects.

Probably not considering how it has no active chemical components. It would irritate your lungs like any other smoke but that's it.

It probably just gives your breath flavor or some ****. I doubt it would actually do anything bad. And also, you don't know that, marijuana could or could not be bad, there just hasn't been any non-biased large researches on the topic to prove anything.

Yes there have. Research indicates that in terms of cognitive function, marijuana either very minimally impairs it, doesn't at all, most of the time impairment only effects short term memory. In terms of physical health, the only thing about weed that could harm you is if you smoke it. So just having cannabis edibles, and getting retarded high off them is completely healthy. Even if you use a vaporizer, you're golden. Oregano just harms the **** out of our lungs.
I can't remember the exact source of this study but i remember reading it, and they brought in a bunch of people, half stoners of all ages, genders, smoking history, and smoking habits. The other half being non stoners.
Between the two groups there was slight, and unsignifigant, or no, change in cognitive function based on IQ tests and the like.
This message brought to you by a stoner that knows his ****, and cares.

But was the study non-biased? I don't mean to attack it's legitimacy but that was the main point of rhiaanor's comment. Just asking since (no offence) you're clearly quite biased on the topic.

"Minimally impairs or does not at all impair cognitive function."
I've hung around way too many stoners to believe that, mate. Studies are well and good, but their parameters and results can be slanted nine ways to Tuesday by whoever is conducting it. What I

Some people have found that while weed doesn't affect your cognitive functions, it does affect how your brain performs, and your brain requires a lot more work and is more active to do the same jobs.

indeed, the only harmful/semi-harmful effect of smoking weed is the paralyzing of the cilia in your lungs, little tiny "brushes", if you will, that help filter out and remove mucus in your lungs, and this is only temporary, although with chronic use they can become slightly impaired. however, those with certain kinds of asthma can find this beneficial, such as this guy right here, haven't had an asthma related incident since i started smoking, and i remember the summer before i started, during football practice my asthma would act up so bad i would almost black out, never had that problem in the past 2 years.
also, eating marijuana (whether you do so in cannabutter i'm not sure) can give you some essential oils, fats, and amino acids, as these are present in the bud (although it tastes like ****), it'll get you high and can help you stay slightly more healthy. (did you also know it can be used as what is predicted to be a viable bio-fuel? it produces more ethanol than corn when processed the right way, and the amount of crop grown to produce said bio-fuel would also filter out as much of the CO2 that it produces by being used)

I smoked weed for a little bit, but it ****** me up. Some people cannot handle drugs (me included) It gave me depersonalization, and derealization. I basically felt insane for awhile, and am still recovering. It's not common, but weed can really **** a kid up.
I still say legalize it for medicinal uses because I'm not a cunt.

i see you read yahoo news...yeah, this was proven in laboratory mice. and in those tests they subjected the mice to such high levels it bordered on overdose (impossible for a human, not exactly improbable for something tiny like a mouse, which, by the way, is not naturally involved with cannabis, therefore its receptors are much smaller, not only because of its size). these mice only experienced brain inflammation because they pumped so much smoke into these mice that their receptors shut down, and the brain released natural bacteria/antigens/white blood cells (can't remember which) to try to kickstart those receptors. showing that a tiny animal subjected to amounts only a smoker that averages 5-8 hours worth a day gets, these tests are ********, and yahoo is not a reliable source.

we really do, did you know in the state i used to live in as well as the one i currently live in they've effectively banned abortion? all because "it's against the bible" or "god would cry" or "it kills babies!".....right, so you're going to let a minority, with no ties to government (or at least that's what it should be, as it ******* says in the bill of rights/ constitution 'separation of church and state'), dictate the freedoms of the majority? you're letting people who have no ties to this other than they don't like it, take away the opportunity for those that might need it, all to satisfy their twisted little message to tug at others heartstrings? these people stand outside of clinics and harass, berate, and sometimes even harm these girls, who are going in there to make the toughest decision of their lives, one that will scar them forever, and suddenly anyone who opposes them is an asshole....
this is why i sometimes have fantasies of the mass murder of WBC members as well as these picketers....perhaps i should seek some help...

If that really are their reasons it's messed up, but there really are a couple of good reasons for banning abortion. I however think that banning anything at all is somewhat hypocritical (is that even a word?) when the US is supposed to be "the land of the free".

I hear about stuff like that all the time, and there seems to be science behind it. But I have a grandmother who has worked with addictions and abuse for over 20 years. And we would have conversations about this. She thinks that marijuana is a horrible thing to get involved with, because in her personal experience she has met dozens of long time weed smokers. She has told me that in nearly all of them they:
1) Have terrible problems with memory
2) Their cognitive functions go completely out the window after about age 50
3) They form a psychological addiction and It takes over their life to the point to where weed and getting high is all they care about.
There are quite of few of those sort of people in my area, and as they get older it's extremely obvious who was involved in it. Short term problems may be very small, but in the long term its horrible.

First of, I'm on your side in that I believe in personal freedom of choice to smoke weed. But you claiming that research supports your argument is fairly meaningless unless you link your source.
Even if the source did check out, a single study can be constructed to prove anything you want. The Wakefield research on the MMR vaccine is a perfect example of a terrible study. Supporting research by no means show that your claims are true. What
does
add weight to your claims is multiple peer-reviewed papers of good scientific quality which support your argument. Try looking up systematic reviews on the Cochrane Library for the health effects of different forms of marijuana ingestion.

To be honest, what usually disturbs me about everyday smokers/users, is not the health issue, which probably is unexistent, but the sociollogical change, as some of them allow weed to take control of their life, basing their entire daily existence towards smoking weed, gaining new friends who smoke regularely, and usually leaving behind the ones that don't. Now i'm not saying everybody does that, but i've lost touch with a couple of good friends that way and it makes me a bit sad
But do feel free to roll a spliff once in a while, it's cool ****.

I agree with this. Add in chain smokers, alcoholics, gamblers, over eaters etc. The thing is, these people are mentally susceptible to addiction. If it wasn't weed it'd be something else. Most people that i know who have an addiction are addicted to other things too. Weed just has a huge negative reputation which is silly because there are much worse things that you can legally buy. I smoke every now and again but I too have seen people become introverted due to it, but others do the same from other addictions.

Well man, it's true what they say about it being a "gateway drug", but that only applies to certain people. There's always gonna be some idiots who let something that should be occasional recreation become a full-blown habit.
Alcoholics are essentially in the same boat.
I met some guys recently (didn't really care for them, but had to hang around with them for a while) who started out smoking weed occasionally and now spend every penny they have on all kinds of drugs, including ecstasy and cocaine.
I'm not badmouthing weed, to be honest I would try it if I had the chance. But seeing those goons waste everything they have chasing some narcotic pipe dream served as a good warning to me.

The only reason weed is a gateway drug is because people are told it is bad for you. People who smoke despite thinking it is bad are the ones who go on to harder drugs because they think that they've already damaged themselves.

How is smoking oregano any better than smoking weed? They're both natural herbs putting out just as much smoke, but one gets you high. There's no extra additives in weed that make the smoke more harmful, just like with oregano. So both will ruin your lungs the same but only one is actually worth it.
Oregano = Weed in terms of damage to lungs.
You're better off smoking weed than Oregano though. Cause whats the point of smoking an italian spice that has no intoxicating qualities?

If it's not casual or social drinking, it is usually because they can't find enjoyment or pleasure in their normal life so they try to create an artificial method of pleasure. Both marijuana and alcohol cause problems in the human body. Alcohol can cause liver failure and brain damage, marijuana can cause cancer, brain damage and lethargicness. Unfortunately both subtances have huge amounts of misinformation present, some of which have been sited earlier on this message board. Half my family are doctors, I hear about this all the time.
