If it means anything, the 04-06 model GTOs had the LS platform engine in them. I know they're a completely different beast from the 60's/early 70's models, but maybe the guy was trying to "accurately" update the power to the modern era?

true, but I hate going to shows and seeing every damn car with the same engine, and worst yet, when they leave the corvette plastic covers on them.
