It shows favoritism, and favoritism breeds jealousy, inferiority and hatred, although if its a one time occurrence then maybe not that much :L

What if the other child had done something to earn it and she has done nothing. Or if it's the other child's birthday. It's not your birthday kid, it's your siblings. Yo can't get **** for nothing.

Why didn't he just say "because your sister did this" or "because it's your sister's birthday"?

When and if I'm a parent I'm going to trying and never use the "because life isn't fair" excuse when my kid doesn't get what he/she wants. I'll try my best to give them the exact reason why something is the way it is.

"you're not the boss of me now, you're not the boss of me now, and you're not so big. LIFE IS UNFAIR....."

Same here, whenever I will be able to give a reason, I will tell it. I know how to not raise kids, at least.

My parents used to give both my sisters small gifts when it was my birthday, and vice versa when it was their birthdays. I think it was a pretty good system, as it'd make everyone happy on each other's birthdays, though I definitely don't think it's necessary.

Well it's a nice system if the kids are being raised good. If they are spoiled brats like my niece and her younger brother, then it isn't a good system. He wants a gift just as big as the one she got and if they don't like it, they shout and cry and scream. I hate being at their place.

Yeah, no, that's really bad. We were happy getting pretty eraser or maybe a set of cheap juggling balls.

As the older kid from this marriage I was happy if they gave me 5 dollars or a chocolate or anything small when it was my brother's birthday (he's younger so he obviously got more stuff). Parents didn't give me anything on his birthday, it was the aunts and grandma, when they came visiting. It wasn't much but hey, I didn't expect anything so I was happy and content.
