The Church was incredibly powerful a few hundred years ago. Today, not so much.

Let's not forget John Paul II stopped the USSR from invading Poland.

they still hold a lot of power.

sure they cant order nations to attack other nations anymore but if pope were to say.for example:obama needs to die

how long do you think it would take for an angry mob of hardcore christians to drag obama into the street and beat him to death?

never underestimate the power of belief

Yet it's still the richest organization on earth.

And the most charitable, too

Owh wait I forgot, the catholic church doesn't get money for free, they work hard on their widespread lies and empty promises.

It ought to be worth at least all the gold they have.

A lot of the church's money is just that - old relics and buildings. You con't really be expected to pawn off your family heirlooms just because you're rich and charitable.

The Christian faith, and a direct command from Jesus, was to give up all worldly possessions in order to get into Heaven.
Your move.

It's not an accomplishment to be charitable if you get the money for free now is it, Catholics may be charitable, not the pope.

I wouldn't really say ''A few hundred years ago'', they were incredibly powerful pretty recently.
Hitler feared the Church very much on his rise to power. A lot of his actions against them lead people to believe he was Atheist, even though thats ******** .

Hitler gave some speech on the radio about how atheism needs to be ''Stamped out.'' (I can't find the exact quote on this one)
And he also said:
"For eight months we have been waging a heroic battle against the Communist threat to our Volk, the decomposition of our culture, the subversion of our art, and the poisoning of our public morality. We have put an end to denial of God and abuse of religion. We owe Providence humble gratitude for not allowing us to lose our battle against the misery of unemployment and for the salvation of the German peasant."

And he did not favor Nietzsche, he favored a corrupted version of ''Thus Spoke Zarathustra'', which was edited highly by his racist sister (who hated him) and a nazi philosopher named Martin Heidegger. Nietzsche talked of a ''Blond beast'' which was originally supposed to be about lions, in the alternative version it is about god. The original ''Thus Spoke Zarathustra'' contradicts Hitler's political beliefs very much, and Nietzsche certainly wouldn't have been a fan of his.

Read these for more info about the whole Nietzsche thing

They still hold an enormous amount of power. If the pope wanted to eat all the food in your fridge you probably couldn't stop him.

3 popes in one year is too many, but if he did try that we would have to get another one.
User avatar #44 to #25 - diablojoe (06/23/2013) [-]
There have been a few example of "years of three Popes" historically and even a "Year of Four Popes"

More accurately, during the Great Schism there were three popes at one time. Way to get confusing

That was actually funny as hell. They tried to fix the two pope problem and they ended up with three popes. It's even funnier how the 3rd guy was ignored after that.

You think I'm kidding? The pope has a group that acts like a mafia granted its not organized crime from my understanding but just the same build as a mafia.

If you're talking about homosexuality, that's not the Church's doing, that's the government. It's not the church controlling the government either, it's politicians who aren't willing to accept change.

Religious politicians
or doesn't the US currency say "In God we Trust"?

They have political power in places they shouldn't. they are losing it but they haven't lost it, why do you think Norway becoming Secular was such a huge ******* deal?
User avatar #43 to #9 - keiishiyama (06/23/2013) [-]
We're a nation of brave citizens ruled by pussies, and they couldn't handle the fact that Communism was a thing halfway across the planet. I'm all for getting rid of "In God We Trust" and "One Nation Under God."

Currency was in protest of the soviet union was known as antireligion/atheists
User avatar #76 to #24 - Shramin (06/23/2013) [-]
I know why the currency is as it is, that doesn't change that religion is now a huge thing in the US.
