Since when was Karl Marx a communist leader? He never led anything, he himself said communism was bound to fail.

That's a common misinterpretation. Marx said that communism would've worked in a society where machines did all the work, more specifically in approximately 200 years later at the time. Under current circumstances, however, communism wouldn't have worked.

He actually, initially, said that Russia was the bulwark against Communism.
He believed that every country/state had to go through each step ("dialectic"): Feudalism, Capitalism, Revolution, Dictatorship of the Proletariat, Socialism, Communism.
