From Massachusetts here so not some pissed off southerner:
Lincoln is far over glorified in american history. If someone takes the time to really study him ( AP history student who took and in depth survey of the civil war last summer) you will see that while he was a good man he was not a great man.
First off he did not want to abolish slavery, he only wanted to stop it from spreading into the new territories. He was actually quoted saying if he could unite the union and win the war without freeing a single slave he would.
Second the emancipation proclamation was actually more a political masterstroke than any care for the slaves. It was a political masterstroke because it appeared to make the war about slavery and thereby kept Britain from getting involved and aiding the south, and it also brought fresh volunteers to the war from the northern abolitionist groups when he needed more soldiers. And it really didn't do anything for the slaves because it only freed the slaves in the confederate states ( where he had no official say) but not in the slave states that remained part of the union.
Third you are saying he looked out for the best interest of the people? Well because he declared war on the south 600,000 Americans perished in the bloodiest war we would have until WWII, the southern states were ransacked and had many innocent peoples homes and farms destroyed and looted. So just think about that.

But you are able to suspend habeas corpus constitutionally if there is an open rebellion.

Lincoln did all those things, but in all honesty, he really was looking out for the people's best interest.
