Speaking about human running; humans are on of the best runners in the animal kingdom. We may not go fast, but our endurance outlasts even horses, if we've got adequate training.

Before we invented spears, and even after, our favoured method of hunting was persistence hunting: literally forcing our prey to run for solong that they literally died of exhaustion.

im not too sure whether humans ate meat before we came up with things like tools and fire. i mean we cant really consume raw meat. not red meat alteast. maybe we could hunt small animals but that we could require lying in ambush and not chasing them since most small mammals and birds could run up a tree or some thing.
User avatar #203 to #201 - crazyolitis (06/17/2013) [-]
Before tools, we were scavengers. Also, we could and can eat raw meat, it's just got a larger chance to give us parasites and making us sick. Humans have had love for meat for quite some time.
#204 to #203 - riseandfightfj (06/17/2013) [-]
before tools we were gatherers. we would have been a whole lot more dependent on fruits and vegetables since they were far easier to acquire. hunting would have become more common after the creation of tools and after we smart enough to coordinate and capture prey. we were probably omnivores, but we would have been closer to the vegetarian/vegan side of it.
User avatar #205 to #204 - crazyolitis (06/17/2013) [-]

User avatar #153 to #2 - rhc (06/17/2013) [-]
yeah. To me, it seems like dogs and humans fill a similar niche.

We're both hunters/occasional scavengers with fantastic lung capacity and endurance. And we live in groups and are highly social.
LIke, if dogs had thumbs, and we were dead, they would totally be ruling the world.

I actually learned something like this from Stephen Colbert. Apparently one of our highest evolutionary advances is the DAT ASS. And the fact that we can run and sweat at the same time. Before weapons, we would run at a constant pace, and our prey would gallop or sprint, without breathing heavily enough to get cool, and then either stop or pass out.

"So the politically correct way to say it is 'You are very evolutionarily advanced and have a higher chance of catching prey...

And I cannot lie.'"

Its pretty sad that in the old days people were accustomed to believing that wolves were "take no prisoners" animals and killed any humans that came in their path, and so the grey wolf went nearly extinct in the Continental U.S until we realized we were idiots now we've protected them, but now we done it so much that their population is kinda out of control and we need hunt them so we don't screw the food chain up. User avatar #155 to #134 - cycloneclone (06/17/2013) [-]
Chill dude, seriously. Just because this is the internet that doesn't mean you shouldn't try to act half decent. I say that because humans are too dumb too have any second thoughts for repercussions of hunting or killing species, causing thousands of them to go extinct. We never really hunted them for meat, only because we were scared of them and didn't know what would happen to the food chain. If one species goes extinct, it can cause screw it all up, whether there being too many predators or too much prey. Its quite sad that humans while pretty much being the ultimate top dogs in the animal kingdom we really don't always put it to good use. The main reason for the wolf hunt isn't so much that their population is extremely high, its that there is too many in much less living area than they used to have, as a result of the spread of humans across the globe. There isn't anything we can do to control that though. We live in their lands, and we live in places humans were never built to live, at least unless we evolve to our environments, but technology already does that for us. I shouldn't say I hate humanity, its that I just really don't understand it. Other animals don't have the mental capacity or emotions to realize if they killed the last grey wolf. Natural extinctions are very rare anyways, as populations very often find their own ways in keeping a natural balance in their ecosystems. Please, please try to be respectful, you may piss off the wrong person one time.

Well jeeze... with a response like that I don't think you deserve a reply but I'll go ahead and take your advice and respect you enough to reply to you.

You have the mindset of a sheltered 15 year old suburban girl (no offense). And what I mean by that is, the world doesn't owe anyone anything. That means that it is not our responsibility as humans to keep the population of other species in balance yet we have made that our responsibility. Lets see some legit sources that compare how many extinctions humans have caused to how many extinctions were caused by any other reason besides humans. I am only finding biased articles on google.

Now lets address the, "humans are too dumb too have any second thoughts for repercussions of hunting or killing species." I didn't include the "thousands of them to go extinct" because that's just a number you made up and it could mean anything from 1000 to 999,999 and obviously shows how little you know of what you're talking about. It sounds like you believe you're one among few people that have figured out that killing a lot of wolves makes wolves go extinct. Guess what, buddy, you're not. Everyone knows this which is why there's more and more effort put into becoming environmentally friendly every day. I will tell you that I base that solely on how many environmentally friendly government owned buildings I have noticed in the United States.

Serious question here, you really can't think of any reason to hunt a dangerous animal if you're not going to eat it? I'm gonna go ahead and answer this for you. They hunted them because less wolves meant less wolves attack humans. Now, before you say "well every other animal only kills for food" well they don't, a common example that I can mention without a doubt are house cats.

I really don't understand how you're so closed minded about this. What are you doing to help the environment or animals from going extinct? If you have a little park cleaning group then sure, you could say a lot
User avatar #186 to #165 - cycloneclone (06/17/2013) [-]
We don't do nearly enough in our environmental and conservation efforts though, but that's for another discussion.
User avatar #184 to #165 - cycloneclone (06/17/2013) [-]
Sorry if I sounded a bit like a hipster and responded so rudely. The world doesn't owe me anything. I'm an idiot human like everyone else, we all are, I'm not saying "Im perfect and every other human is an idiot hurr durr! Save the aniMals! Stop the iNhumane treatment!" I just accept all the bad things and I believe we all take the blame. Yes, we don't officially hold the sole responsibility of maintaining the other populations of animals on earth, but we kinda have no choice if we want to be able to see some of the great wildlife. If we don't make smart choices now, we will regret it in the future. Same with pollution and climate change. I have a cabin up right by the Boundary Waters of Northern Minnesota, and if you could experience the feeling of seeing some of the world most magnificent animals, I believe we could both come to terms on this subject. You've probably never experienced those feelings, an its ok, I understand, and I can't make you. You're are right on one thing, humans aren't always dumb, we are truely one of the most amazing things ever to walk the earth. I don't believe they completely dumb, I mean just ******* look at what we have done! We have ******* skyscrapers 2,700 feet tall! We went to the moon for god sake! I try to take what you are saying into consideration, no offence, but you're just spewing out whatever you can think of. And yes it is true that humans have literally killed thousands and thousands of species. I don't just make stuff up. You are being extremely ignorant, no offence, but thats natural and I do it too. You don't know if I'm stupid. I don't know if you're stupid, perhaps you're just trying to mess with me for all I know. Don't try to assume random stuff, I do my best but am guilty like everyone else. And lastly, humankind doesn't owe me jack **** , like I say I'm guilty like everyone else. I do all I can for the environment and conservation, I really do.

Well house cats only kill because of their instinct to do so, but they have no need for the food since they are fed and taken care of. Domestication of house cats causing thousands of bird deaths yearly that being another thing humans have ****** up on, House cats may kill animals for sport that is indirectly our fault, other than that i agree with you, Its not our job to concern ourselves with extinction of other animals, but we do so because it indirectly affects us. we also do so because as human beings we have the capacity and knowledge to prevent it from happening, other animals as you said do not give a **** , more or less because they have no means of protecting the environment, they also only hunt for themselves while we produce food for the group as a whole. but yeah i agree with you.
User avatar #177 to #174 - toosexyforyou (06/17/2013) [-]

User avatar #167 to #165 - toosexyforyou (06/17/2013) [-]
of this obvious ******** , but if you're not doing anything then how can you even believe anything that you just said? Human population is one of the big causes of extinction of other animals and there are plenty of humans out there trying to make up for that while you're being one human statistic that is just in the population not doing anything and complaining that others aren't doing anything.

You're right, we can't start killing humans to keep population under control. We don't owe any animal that.

Okay the last thing I'm going to talk about is the part about you saying that we live in places humans were never built to live. I want you to think about that for a little bit. How does every animal(including humans) survive? We all adapt to our surroundings. We find shelter wherever we can, we move if the climate in a certain area is bad, we kill certain things for food or for threatening our existance, etc. We change to survive in our surroundings. Now this is the reason why I love humans so much and I am amazed a species exists with this ability. We have the ability to change our SURROUNDINGS TO SUIT US. We are capable of thoughts for repercussions of hunting or killing species and yet you want to call humans dumb yet think every other animal is a genius for just staying balanced in the natural order? That's just stupid, dude, straight up. I don't owe you anything. I'm just going to tell you that based on everything you've written here, I think you're stupid.

Maybe you hate humans and think they're stupid because of the humans you live around. I don't know about you but my friends are brilliant. One of the biggest reasons why I don't think we need to worry about the future of the human race is because of how great the people around me are. If you live long enough, you're definitely going to see a brilliant future.
