In a real combat situation, this or any other formation where by troops are huddled in close together is very dangerous and is never found in modern combat. Especially when opponents have height advantage, or mortars, grenades.
Straight line prone formations are still common given adequate front cover, especially for snipers, machine gunners, or close fire support.

Pic: Pakistan's paramilitary in prone position outside a hospital under attack by terrorists. This is about as many troops you would see this close together in modern combat, note they have concrete cover in line of fire, and are providing close fire support.
