Didn't they also make the World Baseball Classic so other countries compete as well? I think Japan and the Dominican Republic have won in the past.

any other country is free to enter the world series if they so desire. They just... don't for some reason.

It's called the World Series because back in the 1800s, everyone in the US believed that the rest of the world would eventually rival them in baseball, so they chose the name "World's Championship Series" in anticipation of that. But since that obviously never happened, the shortened version "World Series" kind of stuck since then.
