trolling means any number of things to any number of people.

It's definition ultimately depends on its usage which has long since deviated from the supposedly superior examples of the 'recent past'.

IE If you think you're a troll, you're probably not.

A troll used to be someone on some sort of message board who used arguments that had no evidence/proof to back it up in order to get a negative reaction from people.

I've always preferred this picture for the "back in my day" thing, although is does work better when he's saying something odd.

What trolling meant to my history teacher I met last year:
Step 1) Go out to the bar with friends on a Friday
Step 2) Put all the money each of you have in a cup
Step 3) Whoever goes home with the ugliest chick gets all the money.

He promised us as a joke to take us to a bar to go trolling once we graduate.
Pic not related.

trolling is a way of fishing, it's an old word. Used metaphorically trying to bait and/or attract people way before it was popular in the internet.

No. Trawling is done with a net whereas trolling is done with multiple fishing lines.

trolling (a fishing term) is deliberately 'fishing' for emotional and angry reactions by taking a knowingly offensive or controversial stance not necessarily representing your actual opinions. Being a dick is just being a dick.

Actually, no, that is one of the things trolling means right now.
Back then trolling meant pranking on the internet.

Back in my day, being "trolled" was referred to as "being a newfag"
