you know, i still dont know how the hell a pothole occurs. it just amazes me that a random hole is on the road and the debris from it.. is no where to be seen...

potholes are caused by freeze-thaw. In winter during the day water gets in to small cracks in the road at night the water freezes and expands making the crack bigger until you get a pothole. The original cracks are caused by constant vibrations form vehicles traveling on the road

Really?

Ignore Hitlertongue

It's pretty simple explained... Water runs trough small cracks underneath the spot where the pothole will occur. Water expands in Volumina when freezing... this breaks the cracks wider open. When the ice is molten there is nothing that can hold the weight of the cars anymore.
Car drives on the weak spot.
This kills the asphalt.

Water gets into cracks in the ground, freezes in winter causing it to expand, then melts, then freezes and expands more and more as more water gets in speeding up the process, and eventually you have a pothole.

constant erosion of the ground under the asphalt, which causes it to become hallow and fall in on itself, forming potholes.
Or, water simply cools, expanding slightly, but over time it will have the same effect.

...well that makes sense... i honestly once thought (this was a couple years ago btw) that people just had a mental condition that caused them to get a pickaxe and go out in the middle of the night and dig a pothole...yeah..i was pretty gullible

that would be freaking scary, imagine walking down the street and seeing a bedraggled person in a gown, swinging a pickax into the road with insane vigor. Laughing chittering on about some lunatic thing or another.
